We're in a reverse roll. What state are you from? There's a lot of pros and cons to both. They can't make you do anything but like a user on here said if I can't trust my surgeons opinion how will I be trusting him to cut me and move around my organs. I'm paraphrasing she articulated it better

I was asked if I had reflux and I said I've had a bit of it but it's not bad at all. And I believe I got only because of weight gain anyway. I'd never had it prior nor with my 3 pregnancies, apart from one 10 min. episode with my 3rd pregnancy and it was awful. I haven't experience anything like that again.

I don't want bypass for many reasons -but the main one is the bowel issues, dumping. I have bowel issues (all my life). The surgery would just make life even more miserable for me. I'll discuss this with the surgeon. But I would imagine they'll want to do the probe on me too.

I choose rny because of my reflux. My surgeon asked if I had a preferance and when I said rny, she said that was her plan also.

I don't have diabetes yet, but those meds stay at the hospital when you leave after rny, I was told. Also the recovery seems to be easier.

Did a lot of research and I don't mind the rerouting anymore. It's reversable, sleeve is not. But we all make our own desicions, good or bad, the future can't be predicted.

I'm on the table Nov 21st and can't wait! Good luck to you all!

I thought you wouldn't have dumping with the sleeve, but after reading the forums for the last couple of months, it seems that you can have dumping with sleeve too, it just depends. Seems ppl with the sleeve do a lot more throwing up than the other thing, and I've seen them calling the vomiting dumping. I'd rather *!*! then vomit. At first I thought it was cool that my surgeon was pushing the sleeve, but now I'm not sure. I know he only did like 3 bypasses in the past year to like 200 sleeves, so that doesn't give a vote of confidence on him doing the bypass if I chose that.

I understand sleeves, are a easier procedure and faster for the surgeon

I was planning on the bypass also. Then when I had my EDG, he found that the part of my stomach that would end up "blind" with that surgery, was full of polyps. I also have a large hiatal hernia and have been treated for heartburn/GERD that may be caused by the hernia. He suggested I get the sleeve because of the polyps. I had never really considered the sleeve, so I started researching it and have decided that I would rather have the sleeve than the bypass. I got my approval letter on Friday afternoon (after the office closed, of course!) and found that I had been approved for the bypass. So, now they will have to resubmit me for the sleeve, I guess. Hopefully it will all work out because I was approved very quickly for the bypass. I will also have the hernia repaired with the surgery. I'm hoping the heartburn goes away with the hernia, but it's totally under control with 20mg a day of nexium. Have you read any books about the surgeries?

I'm worried about the malobsortion of Vitamin and minerals. Also a bit concerned about it taking longer than the sleeve. I've read that if your bmi is greater than 50 sleeve is safer. I'm at 57 bmi. Surgeon reassured me but the concern lingers

I was told just the opposite. I had the sleeve in 2013 and rny was not an option by this particular surgeon. After going through the sleeve I had gerd so bad never had it before the sleeve. My sleeve failed and I went to a new Dr, was going to have a revision done to it but once the new Dr explained that a sleeve only guarantees you to lose 60-90 pounds and rny is for 90 and over, I chose to revision to an rny. I had my rny 2 weeks ago and it's been great so far.

If given the option would you have gone with the rny or would you have done it the same?

I would still get the sleeve, I've heard some horror stories and actually witnessed one with my uncle. The sleeve just seemed overall safer. I've dropped about 36 pounds in 3 weeks. After this healing period is over I'll be fine. Just trying to get through it.

I had GERD that was diagnosed via endoscopy about 8 years before my surgery. No hernia at that time. I was on Nexium for a number of years. I was able to stop the Nexium for a couple of years. I then started to have really bad problems with it about 1 year before my surgery. During the pre-op I had the endoscopy redone and now had a hernia.

I still had the sleeve. We never discussed the RNY. Surgeon fixed the hernia at the same time as the sleeve and I was on Nexium for the next 3 months. I am now 20 months out and have not been on Nexium since and have not had heartburn or GERD.

Hector if I were you I would check to see if you have a hernia. If so the surgeon should be able to fix the hernia at the same time as he does the sleeve. I would then take a PPI after the surgery. I personally think the obesity also contributes to reflux. Once you get a lot of that weight off that should help too.

I think that is why I could go a couple of years where I did not take Nexium. I had lost 40 pounds. I started having problems when I gained it back.

For those saying that sleeve is less invasive, ask your surgeon to show you the major blood vessel structure after sleeve. You go from having 3 to having one supporting a very long staple line.

Bottom line, surgery is

Invasive no matter which you choose. This is a personal choice between you and your surgeon to suit your specific circumstances. These all seem like personal opinions on "invasive" surgery. What surgery is NOT invasive?

My doctor pushes RNY. I know he's done a few sleeves but over 3000 bypass. He wants me to have the bypass.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
