I was just wondering if there is anyone that is thinking of weight loss surgery or has had weight loss surgery that eats a plant based diet?

On April 11, 2016 I had the gastric sleeve done. Once I started my liquid diet and no longer was eating meat, I just switched to a plant based diet and never looked back. I still will occasionally have traces of dairy in something I eat, but I'm working on switching to a vegan diet.

Would love to hear your post-surgery plant based meals if this is something you are also going through.

Brittney :)

Hi! I am a lacto-ovo vegetarian, and I was sleeved four days ago. My nutritionist had no concerns for me, so that was reassuring (although I've been veg for almost 20 years, so I knew there would be a lot of options).

I am planning on Beans, lentils, tofu, tempeh, and veggie "meat" products, like veggie burgers. My nutritionist said I can start to try those things when I hit the soft-foods phase (when others can start soft meats, for instance). She did recommend using up to 2 Protein shakes from that stage forward, if I need them.

There are a couple vegan Protein Shakes that my nutritionist has on our approved list. I'll track down the name for you.

Good luck to you!

Thank you for responding! My surgeon is a vegan and has been very supportive in my decision to switch.

I'm 4 months out and have had no issues with any of the things you listed. Lentil lettuce cup tacos are actual a fav of mine!

Excited to know I'm not the only one out there!

Good luck with everything ❤️

I'd love to incorporate more plant based foods into my diet but am still trying to burn weight off and maintain my Protein levels.

I'd like to learn more about what you eat for Protein and still stay low carb (Fiber carbs are fine with me).

Congratulations on your progress! You seem to be doing a wonderful job!

The Protein options are limitless with a plant based diet. I'll list you some of my favorites:

  • Chickpeas
  • Lentils
  • Tempeh
  • Tofu
  • Nuts
  • Beans
  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • meat Replacements - I love Nate's Meatballs and Beyond meat burgers!

Also, probably one of my favorite things to have is cauliflower! I am hooked on cauliflower steaks at the moment. They are simply to die for!

I wasn't given a lot of recipes. Just enough to show what a normal day should look like.

A lot of my recipes are just from searching and experimenting in the kitchen. I really enjoy looking at Pinterest, my ForksOverKnives app, and Oh She Glows website.

If you enjoy Pasta, I like to cut carbs and calories with Tofu noodles. They are wonderful and I can't tell the difference. I find mine at Whole Foods and order from Amazon.< /p>

I'm lacto ova vegetarian too, 24 years now and I am going to continue being one and maybe a part time vegan. I have been hoarding recipes for carb alternatives like chips, bread, pizza etc while also acknowledging that this is a lifestyle change and I will not be able to return to my same habits.

I enjoy seaweed and kale chips if I need something to crunch on. They have been an excellent alternative.

A lot of starchy things I can't handle, especially rice. Rice feels as if it gets stuck in my chest. I felt that feeling once and am in no hurry to repeat it.

I've really been trying to incorporate more raw vegan meals and I've had a lot of luck so far.

If I need something quick and on the go, I've been grabbing the Louisville Vegan Jerky. It is SO good and it only takes about two or three bites to be full.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
