Can You Stretch Your Sleeve?

Recommended Posts

I attended a WLS Support Group Meeting this evening and the presenter explained that you can stretch your sleeve. I've read in a number of places (including here) that you can not stretch your sleeve. What is the correct answer to this question? Does the ASMBS (American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery) have a position on this topic?

When done correctly your sleeve cannot stret h because that part of the stomach is removed. It may feel like some stretching because once all your swelling goes down you will ve able to eat a little more

That is what I have heard as well. Looking for some evidence that a sleeve can not be stretched.

Have your doctor explain it to you.

It doesn't really matter if it stretches anyway if you are eating proper portions. There shouldn't be a chance of over eating because people should be weighing and measuring their proper portions forever. And if you weight and measure proper portions, it is never going to stretch.

The only way a sleeve is stretching is a botched surgery.

All I can tell you is my own story.

I am now over five years out and my restriction is alive and very "active".

I will add that "waayyyy back in the day", more of the stomach was routinely removed. I was told that about 93% of mine was removed. I believe that today's surgeons remove between 80-85% --maybe a wee bit more.

There's quite enough for one to worry about without worrying about things that may or may not years down the line.

Enjoy the "honeymoon" period of your WLS journey. It won't last forever. Weight loss will slow down, but stretch? Naaa.

I was told that after the surgery you can only get 4ox to 6oz, but once swelling goes down, you can 'stretch' it to 8oz, maybe a little more at a time. But you cannot ever stretch back to the same size as your original stomach.

My surgeon said there's absolutely no way to stretch a sleeve, it would burst first.

I was sleeved 7/30/14 had a baby 9/23/15 I just saw my surgeon 2 weeks ago who claimed I could have stretched my sleeved from

the hormones from pregnancy so he's going to scope me to see if it did and if so make a decision from there.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
