Anyone else thinking prematurely to get rid of fat clothes

Recommended Posts

I'm months away from my surgery but I can tell you that this is something that I can't wait to do! I live in Japan so I've always been stuck with the double-whammy of not being able to buy clothes here and the fact that Japanese homes and apartments have very little closet space. For the former it's bad because I have to save everything, unless it is literally falling apart, in case I lose weight (!), but it's made worse by the latter because since virtually all my closets are bursting with boxes and boxes of extra clothes. I can't wait to have free space again!

That said, I'm not getting rid of anything until I've actually had the surgery and I can see the weight coming off. Like others have said, I'll probably get rid of things when I'm 2 sizes out. This is definitely a NSV I'm looking forward to.

Same goes for me! I have clothes from size 8 to size 22. I managed to have a good weight loss in 2011, so the only clothes that aren't dated are size 16 and up. I haven't been a size 8 since 1990! I'd like to think I will force myself to get rid of it all at some point. I like the idea above of keeping just one size about your current one. I will start over if I have to (and I hope it never comes to that.) I've been dreaming of the styles I hope to wear when I get back into non-plus sizes, and I don't have any of those in my closets! Can't wait to go shopping (and to be able to tuck shirts in!!!) :)

Even 2.5 years post-op and down 150 pounds, I still have all my fat clothes in the basement. I'm hoping I never need them but am having difficulty due to the effort needed to buy nice clothes in those sizes. Still, that's no excuse and I just decided that it's time to let go.

@@Andrew0929 -- I hope you find the fat clothes purge as therapeutic as I did. Doing it was a serious statement to myself that meant a lot, and all positive.

Doesn't mean it was easy, because I had never ever done that before.

But it was the right thing.

I am waiting for my doctor to schedule my surgery date; however, through tears of joy of being approved, my mind did jump to my closet, I had already donated some "smaller" clothes when I had given up on losing weight but still have enough I hoarded that I hopefully will shrink into. I see maybe a year into the future boxing up my XXXLarge clothes and it keeps me focused on the positive but at the same time I have to be realistic and understand that shrinking in size is not going to happen overnight. For now I will leave my closet alone and look forward to my dream fashion show later.

I heard that you should keep at least one pair of your 'At my biggest' jeans to compare and put on when your x months down the path to a new you.

That way you can really feel that difference. A good NSV moment. Especially on stall weeks.

I'll definitely be doing that! In all honesty, I'll probably keep some of my favourites that are still in good condition, for at least a little while. I've lived too long in a country where the clothes don't fit me to get rid of everything.

However, I would like to be able to get a few things taken in if possible (mostly shirts and dresses, and possibly a suit skirt and jacket) just to give them a little extra life. I just need to find a good seamstress or tailor who could do it for me.

I didn't have anything small except one item from college. I moved before I even thought about having surgery and purged my closets of anything I hadn't worn in the past 18 months, with the exception of that one item from college.

As I was losing, as soon as my clothes were loose, they were gone. Either donated or trashed depending on the condition. I didn't even keep an item to fat shame myself with like people love to do in pictures.

I have a friend that lost 200lbs and has kept it off for several years on her own without surgery and she told me as soon as you lose get rid of the clothes, constantly. She said keeping the clothes, you secretly give yourself permission to regain. So I got rid of everything, fast.

I found that buying new clothes was the best way to show my weight loss to myself.

The only things I haven't got rid of are my winter coats. I have some furs I will finally be able to wear. I have some leather jackets I am going to try and have tailored, but they need to be taken in so much not sure it is possible. I have coats I bought last year because I was losing and needed coats that fit and wouldn't let wind in. They are close to new, but they will definitely need to go before winter, they are all too big.

My opinion is chuck it all ASAP, don't look back.

I'm so jealous of everyone with closets and boxes of clothes! At size 30/32 it's so hard to find anything that fits that doesn't cost a ton. I can't buy very many clothes so I keep everything until it's so worn out it has holes. I currently have about 3-4 outfits I can wear, total. I expect to have to keep them for a while, even while losing. I can't wait to get into smaller sizes so I can buy clothes without having to pay and arm and a leg.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
