Gastric Bypass vs. Gastric Sleeve

Recommended Posts

How did you make a decision on whether the bypass or sleeve is the better option? I'm really fearful of "dumping" with gastric bypass. I HATE being nauseated! When I read my own question it sound ridiculous, but this is really a concern for me.

I know people who have had the sleeve and have dumped.

For me, it was a matter of what would help me get closer to my goals. That just happened to be the bypass. I will be using dumping as a tool, if I dump, chances are I didn't need that thing anyway. I say "If" because dumping doesn't necessarily happen.

Talk to your surgeon because most of the time they will tell you what they think would work best for you.

Actually dumping is something that only happens to about 30% of those with RNY surgery. It's almost always caused by sugary foods, or really high carb bad for you foods. These are foods you need to avoid, regardless of the surgery you choose.

I chose the RNY because the idea of having 1/2 of my stomach actually cut out and stapled seemed really harsh to me. While the RNY, while also being very severe CAN be reversed should some catastrophic event happen to me.It also has a longer history, and it's considered the 'gold standard'.

That being said, any tool you choose will work. But the thing you have to remember is that any surgery you choose is nothing but a tool to help you achieve your goals.

With either surgery, in about 2 years time, you will have the abililty to eat near normal portions, you have the ability to 'cheat' your tool, eat slider foods high in bad things, drink high calorie drinks, etc.

I think some doctors suggest certain surgeries because that is what they are more comfortable with/better at.

Do your research, and feel good, no matter which way you choose that you are making a lifetime decision to improve your health :)

Thank you so much for your comments! I was only thinking about the sleeve until yesterday, when I saw the Army surgeon who will refer me to the bariatric Dr. She had told me to not dismiss the bypass because she thought it was the best option for me. That scared me! I've actually been up since 0230 thinking about it. You make a valid point about reversible about permanent removal of most of the stomach. You've actually given me some relief! I think I'm just caught up in the whole idea of everything. I know how to lose weight, in that I lost over 100 lbs back in 2002. I was able to keep most of if off until 2012. I was hurt in Afghanistan, came home had 5 orthopedic surgeries and could no longer work out 6 days a week, 2 hours a day. My weight has just snowballed. I will never be able to workout again like I used to be able and I can't keep weight off without high intense physical activity. Guess I'm in that 95%, who can't keep weight off. Thank you so much for your support. I've just started the process so I'm sure I have several months ahead of me before the actual surgery. Best wishes for both of you. I look forward to watching your progress.

Bonnie

Others are correct, dumping only incur within 30% of patients. I too was debating about both WLS but I ultimately made the choose for Bypass. It's the gold standard plus it just seems like the sleeve wouldn't work for me. Too easy to fall back in my old ways. I'm good on Portion Control just have a sweet tooth.

My surgeon told me I would do better with both procedures and didn't recommend one over the other.

I had gastric bypass in Feb...so I'm a little over 4 months PO....I too was afraid of dumping but I knew at the very beginning of this process that I wanted the gastric bypass. I think I had one minor dumping episode early on...I ate some creamy Peanut Butter too fast and I was uncomfortable for about half an hour....since then I have avoided peanut butter! I haven't vomited or had instant diarrhea from eating anything yet....I don't seem to have an issue with small amounts of sugar. I have only eaten whole wheat bread toasted...too afraid to try the really bad stuff like white bread, cake and doughnuts! I hope I continue to have that fear...lol...Good luck choosing!! Btw...my reason for choosing RNY was because of the long term data available , helps with heartburn ,and that you are suppose to lose a bit more then with the sleeve.

I also had gastric bypass in February. I also have had 1-2 dumping experiences and it has really made me examine everything I eat. The episodes weren't awful just really uncomfortable to me. The surgeon recommended that I go with the bypass due to the amount of weight I have to lose, and I am happy that I did because in 4 and 1/2 months I have lost 101 lbs!

I have my surgery in July. I'm excited to finally have a chance to lose my weight. You all have given me a lot to think about, so I thank you for that. Rebecca805, I could only imagine how happy you are to lose so much in four months. What do you do when you work out

I think bypass helps to keep you in line. Like I know I can't have sugar on bypass, but with a sleeve, nothing would be stopping me. I wanted the best results as well as something that would help control me.

I can relate to what you are saying PrinceVanHalen. If I can't have sugar without getting sick, it will be a great deterrent. Congratulations on your great weight loss!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!

      Today was rough...
I've been experiencing a headache all day today that just won't go away. I'm thinking it's now progressing into a migraine. Does anyone else get headaches from taking vitamin B12? I did some research and learned that usually a lack of B12 causes headaches. But I've noticed when I take it, I have reoccurring headaches. 😫
