Gastritis?

Recommended Posts

I was admitted to the ER today for Gastritis! Honestly, when I went in, I was just feeling shortness of breath. Afterwards, they ran some tests and made me take a liquid. After the liquid, I felt a hardness in my chest and definitely feel worse than when I went in there.

They said I have to change my diet... to not eat any spicy foods, a lot of Water (the only thing I drink) and you know the rest. Just basic healthy eating. I presume I got this from adding a lot of spice to my food but also these pills I took. They told me not to take them anymore.

Does anyone have experience with Gastritis??? If so, how long did it last? Any tips?

Gastritis is simply an inflammation of your gastric system. Obviously something really irritated your system. I would stick to eating a bland diet for now. It may take a few weeks to a month to help improve your system. I would also look into a probiotic in the meantime.

Hope all gets better soon for you.

I'm kicking around a few different possible issues I might have right now, and one of them might be Gastritis. What were all of your symptoms?

What was the test they did? Can you explain exactly what Gastritis is?

After taking my antibiotic, I waited 15 minutes to lay down. I just wanted to take a nap but right when I laid down, I felt a heaviness in my chest. I walked around a bit and then started having a shortness of breath. In panic mode, I tried to vomit out the pills but nothing would came out - which lead to a weird taste in my mouth.

When I went to the ER, they took my vitals and then wanted to do a cardiograph. It came out fine but then they wanted me to take this liquid. I forgot the name of it but it began to numb my mouth. I asked her if that was normal and she said it was a numbing liquid. Weird but ok... So then after about 30 minutes they discharged me and said I have gastritis and would be fine in 3 days, just not to eat spicy foods, chocolate, or carbonated drinks.

Honestly, they didn't give me much information. I got most of my information on gastritis online. It's basically an inflammation of the stomach.. Right now, it hurts to swallow so I'm just eating fruits and drinking Water. I also am taking the gas X strips to get gas out.

Thanks ladies! I will admit I did kind of steer away from my usual diet. This month makes 11 months that I've had gastric sleeve surgery, but I did steer off gear. I did have 2 sodas this weekend, not all at once. It took me a while (few days) to finish them but I honestly don't have a good excuse as to why I did it >.< Definitely a big regret of mine. And I did have chocolate. I think this could be something that triggered the gastritis, along with the antibiotic pills I took.

Yes, I've had it and basically diet change will help and keep it at bay for the most part. I would stick with some soft foods for a few days, no coffee, nothing spicy or irritating. Mine lasted a few weeks at times, but everyone is different.

What kind of food did you eat? Sorry you had to go through this also!

I think the sleeve may make us somewhat over concerned when anything unusual occurs, which typically compounds the problem or symptoms. Then we jump on the internet and start clicking on symptoms and before you know it.... a dozen possible conditions. I know I have done this.

I am over two years out and have had zero issues. Then outa the blue I get horrid Gerd. Coughing, everything causing heartburn and coughing, stomach hurts. (thats another point too. details to follow) food tastes blah, Water tastes blah, don't want to eat anything, low grade fever, chills, sweats, etc etc. I lose a quick 12 pounds over two weeks. (only good part) I guess maybe Gastritis, Gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, Gerd, H Plyori, Gallbladder, and a few more I already forgot. I get some antibiotics for any potential infections and it does help to control the fever. Now here almost three weeks later and I don't really know anything for sure. I have an appointment with GI doc to get endoscopy and had a Abdominal Ct scan to see if anything shows up. Oh, and throw in some canker ulcers in my mouth to complicate things even more. (I know, probably stress related) I feel like I'm going in circles.

What's worse is I don't have much confidence in them finding anything. Probably gonna get a lot of tests with inconclusive as the answer. Talk about frustrating.

Ok, enough of my issues. sorry, I didn't mean to hijack your thread.

Cuchas, at least they gave you a diagnosis and a simple treatment.

The point I was trying to make is........before the sleeve, I probably would have paid little attention to the symptoms and just let it work thru whatever it is.....(not saying that is good or bad) but I certainly wouldn't be obsessing over it.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this :( It all sounds very stressful and we know how stress can make things worse... Is your appointment to see the doctor soon? If it helps get a better grip on things for you, I was also diagnosed with H Plyori a while back. I never noticed any symptoms before but my doctor did tell me to stop eating spicy foods. I did for a while, then went back on it, and well... I have gastritis. I guess my stomach can no longer handle it?

I hope you find time to relax and hopefully not stress out too bad anymore. I hope everything works out. God bless <3

Both spicy and chocolate are my nemesis.

I'm holding out little hope they will survive recommended things to eliminate. :(

Oops, sorry! I basically ate Soups, anything soft (cottage cheese), fish and ground turkey, and fruits and veggies that are non-acidic. And if you can juice, do smoothies or Protein Drinks is always a good back up:)

I can't count how many times my endoscopes showed up negative when there was really something going on. If you have all of those symptoms and your doctor says nothing is wrong/showing up, don't take no for an answer. It's not normal to feel like that every day. Something is probably going on, it's just doing what needs to be done to figure out the "what".

Cuchas, what antibiotics were you on, and if not too personal, for what? Antibiotics can do a number on your system. Any time I'm prescribed an antibiotic, I take Florastor probiotic with it. Florastor is the only one that the antibiotic will not wipe out of your system. I've had great success with it in the past. I usually take Align daily (I've had IBS for several years. The Align keeps it all good).

Hope you heal quickly!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
