Beef, and pork

@@Renkoss - its amazing how that one.....teeny....tiny...bite can make you feel like you have swallowed a rock.

Yeah especially in the early months post-op I would go from "I'm feeling fine" to "OMG, I'M GOING TO EXPLODE" with zero warning. It's gotten a lot better the further out from surgery I've gotten, thankfully.

Some days I can eat beef and some days I can't. chicken at 5 months is still hard. I grill a thin slice of deli ham add a little Water and poach an egg on top. Sometimes I add a slice of veggie cheese for an egg mcmuffin without the muffin.

I mainly had seafood until 6 months. I had ground beef, lamb and pork a few times. I wasn't cleared for steak until 6 months. I have steak several times a week now because I find it the most filling and satisfying. As long as a meat isn't dry, I don't have issues with it.

YES! Just that one teeny tiny bite and BOOM! You are in the bathroom hanging your head in the commode! I tried the turkey deli meat today and I don't think I should eat deli meats right now. I think had it been turkey breast directly off the turkey, or even a piece of ham right off the ham it would be different. lunch meats have nitrates and nitrites, and I don't think my system likes it anymore. Not right now anyway. I'll stick with the chicken, tuna, and fish for now. I did eat pulled pork a week or so ago and it was fine. So I'd assume it wouldn't bother me.

It amazing me how different we all are.

I can not tolerate much chicken at all. I will eat it only if it is very moist--like being cooked in a crock pot, or grilled and then dipped into a vinegar sauce--no BBQ Sauce nor ketsup---tooooo sweet.

I will tolerated moist chicken on top of a beautiful bed of greens, just so I can have the treat of eating the greens. :)

I've never had a problem with rare beef or juicy pork. Fish--especially those that I've caught out of the surf myself is my all time favorite!!! Yummmmyyyy. :)

Chicken? Blahhhhhh and yuuuuuccccckkkk. :(

It's funny how we all react differently. For me, even at 6 months out, I can't eat chicken. Doesn't matter how moist or how much sauce is with it, it is no bueno. Pork the same way, but I can eat just about any cut of beef including beef Jerky and it sits well. It really is trial and error to find out what works and doesn't, but yeah, chicken is the devil.

Valentina, I'm really not a chicken person either. I'm getting more used to eating it though because it seems to be one of the only real meats I can eat at this stage. I had RNY 1 month ago, and so far haven't really tried beef yet. I'll give it a bit longer before attempting. I think the deli meats are a no-no for me right now because of nitrates and such. Just didn't sit well with me.

Most of the fish we eat is caught from Lake Erie (I live in Northeast Ohio). My husband goes fishing quite a bit, so we enjoy Walleye, Perch, Bass, and others. We do purchase our seafood though because, well it's a Lake :)

I had bought some deli ham lunch meat shaved and tried some Saturday evening as a snack. I had two thin slices with a 1 oz piece of cheese. Those two slices seemed to be okay; it did not have any spicy seasonings to it and I chose Ham off the Bone. So no Honey Ham, Maple Ham, Bavarian Ham...anything like that. I got greedy and tried a 3rd piece. That is when everything went to pot. Instantly had pain in middle of my chest, felt nauseous, actually was in the bathroom with head over the commode. I did spit up a few times, and once felt like food was coming up, but after that time everything kind of calmed down. Did I overeat or did the ham not sit well with the tummy? I don't plan on trying the lunch meat again for a while. I also bought some turkey breast but haven't tried it yet. A bit nervous to do so.

On a side note, when I began pureed foods, I did take some chili that the husband and I had made over the winter and froze and pureed about 1/4 cup of it. The chili had meat and Beans in it and after pureeing it, was fine to eat and sat quite well. I have not ventured to try any other beef such as taco meat, steaks, etc. yet. I'm pretty much sticking with chicken, tuna, fish and that's about it.

Early after surgery I had to be careful with deli meats. I think because deli turkey and the ham off the bone are very soft meats they could sorta pack in my sleeve and make me uncomfortable feeling. If I alternated the deli meat with something else such as Tomato or broccoli I didn't get that feeling.

NikkiDoc, thanks for that. I don't think that the deli ham meat disagreed with my pouch; I think it was more I pushed the envelope and ended up eating too much. That is a feeling I never want again! It was painful, scary, uncomfortable, and I hate throwing up!

I will try it again, but perhaps will wait a few more weeks or even month. The turkey deli meat didn't cause the same thing (of course I was aware of how much I was eating) but I can say that my stomach felt weird afterwards. I'm wondering if it is because of lunch meat tends to be very processed or includes nitrates/nitrites? Either way, staying away from it for a bit.

Sorry to hear it! It may not be much consolation, but it’s normal. meat is often not tolerated well post-op. It may come back, though!

@@Renkoss, the issues might have also been related to the processing of the ham. There’s a chance that unprocessed meats might not have the same effect…but then again, you only know if you try. Everyone’s different.

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

      Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
