Update: I was sleeved on 16 May (9 days postop) and doing great! Currently 27 lbs down since Apr 2016. HW: 221, SW: 201 (BMI 34.9) CW: 195. No problems at all and very minimal pain after surgery. Getting 80 grams of Protein in daily and 64 oz of Water. So excited for what is to come in my new life. Anxious to start a more vigorous working out and toning. When the hospital nurse walked in to my room postop and said " girl why did u have surgery? I am fatter than u!" I said "yea well I have a big problem losing the weight and don't want to be fat period." We laughed about it. I know I made the right decision after spending so much money on diet pills and laser treatments.

Good for you. I am glad you are being proactiv. I get so annoyed when people say things like "You are not that big, why are you getting surgery?". In my mind I'm thinking "I have the fat gene and I may not look that big to you now but I know where my weight can go and I want to get ahold of this before I get to 3-400 pounds and cant get out of bed". Ok end of rant lol. Congrats!!!

Gosh i really needed to read this. I recently had my Gastric Sleeve 9days ago. I have been overweight all of my adult life. Major yoyo dieter, i would lose and regain. my willpower would fail after 4-5 months hence gaining the weight.

Fat person in my friends group who were all skinny and still trying to lose weight. It really hits your self confidence.

I chose gastric sleeve because im soon heading into my 40's my family has bad health issues and i dont want to be like that. I want to be at a happy place and healthy. my BMI was 32, and i had high blood pressure and cholesterol. I still do, still early days though so i only pray it gets better. i was 196lb ( 5,6) going into surgery.

So i took the plunge. I was so worried about my future after this, its permanent and there is no going back. Buyers remorse literally set in the day after "did i do the right thing? my life is changed forever? complications?, i can't enjoy food anymore" everything !!!

Im still new finding my way and coming to terms with it. I just hope i have get to a place mentally to accept it. For any of you who have been out a few months. Do you feel a sense of normalcy with your decision? Are you heading in the direction you want ?

I'm sorry to hear you're unsure about your decision. Like you, I've been a yo-yo all my life too. One of those pretty girls who would get noticed more if she wasn't so overweight in the midst of her skinny friends. I'm also approaching 40 and told myself that I'd had enough. My knees hurt more than years past and I also have tons of health issues that run in my family. I needed something that was going to be permanent to give me the "wake up call" that I needed. I want to be healthy so I can enjoy my daughter and be confident in my skin. Although I'm not months out (only 3 weeks), life gets back to normalcy more and more every day. Essentially, I can eat almost anything I want, it's just in much smaller portions and I have to chew the hell out of it! Isn't that what a healthy relationship with food is about anyway? Now I'm find myself making healthier choices just because I want a new me so badly. Don't get me wrong, I wanted to scarf a whole pizza today but I'm so happy knowing that I don't have that option anymore and I can still have a tiny piece if I wanted to. I sure hope this helps with your doubts, I'm already 20lbs down and feeling so much better. You've come to the right place for support. We're all here to help! Good luck to you!

@@OMW2Slim -- congrats. Good for you in making a wise decision! I also got the "you don't look like our usual patients" routine...

@@tryingtobemybest -- congrats to you too. "Buyers remorse" is so common -- but you're already here and I think you'll be very happy with your choice in the long run. I'll bet you get that way when you buy a nice new car too -- then you come to love it in the coming weeks. I'm delighted with mine now. Yesterday was 4 weeks from my surgery, and I've already lost 29.5 pounds (and I'm firmly in the first "stall" but that's to be expected). I already feel so much better than I did before the surgery. I suspect you'll feel just the same quite soon. One thing I want to warn you about -- you mentioned your blood pressure. Are you still on bp meds? I think what happened to me is common: I was still taking my bp meds, and about 2 weeks after surgery (and 20 pounds down) my blood pressure dropped about 20 points and I thought that was great. Next day it was down to 90/60 or something and I wasn't feeling well. Spoke to my doc who took me off the bp meds immediately, and now by bp is at the textbook perfect levels I had 15 years ago! (I measure my bp at home daily). So if you're still on your meds look out for that. If you can monitor at home, great. In any event be sure to consult your doctor.

May you both have the same easy recovery I've had!

I was sleeved in December, started with a bmi of 31.

Since i have lost about 35 pounds and my bmi is now 25

I am still losing and its hard to gain.. But i also have a family history of heart issues and thought this would be best..

i have to say it times its hard, i reached my goal and it just keeps coming off.... it hard to gain when you can only eat about 1/4 of what you used to.

BUT its WORTH it

Good for you! I wouldn't worry about avoiding carbs before surgery; try to eat a lot of Protein. You will need these reserves to get through the first 72hours post-op. I was sleeved May 9th and have had a wonderfully smooth recovery process. You'll be glad you made a preventative decision!!

So I had my surgery on March 31 with approval from BCBS OF DE. My BMI was 40 with no co morbidities. Then a few weeks ago I received a $2800 bill from the anesthesia dept. saying that my insurance company has denied the claim?? Has anyone else had this happen? My surgeon told me to have them resubmit the bill so fingers crossed.

Thanks so much for all the positive feedback. I am 33 lbs down today and I have not one single regret yet. Feeling great. I see my surgeon on Wednesday fior follow up and postop class and I am still taking my BP meds. I feel absolutely wonderful. @@wenrishel I have BCBS too. My hospital bill was paid but I haven't gotten anes bill yet. I double checked at time of admission that it was an in-network provider. Fingers crossed I get no bill. I only paid $150 on admission for 100% coverage. Resubmit.

Low(ish) BMI peeps,

How did the surgery affect your workouts? I keep searching for advice but it seems aimed at much heavier and less mobile people (i.e., recommending "walking" post-op as a workout). I (and likely most of you) are instead in the "fit but fat" category, used to good heavy cardio workouts near-daily. Did you have to cut back post-op? I know we have to avoid swimming and lifting >25 pounds for a few weeks, but what about running, hiking, biking? How soon was it before you could have a vigorous workout? Did you feel you had enough energy for a workout given your low calorie intake? Was it hard to hydrate enough?

Personally at 18 days post op I am only walking. I could bike if I had one. My MD said no gym until 30 days so I have not tried. And anyway...my energy right now is much less than before. My husband had the surgery 2 years ago and he did not have as hard a time as I with calorie and Fluid intake so my story may not be the norm.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?
      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
