Hungry all the time?

Recommended Posts

I'm 14 months post surgery and I've noticed that I don't stay feeling full for very long anymore? Usually about and hour after I eat I feel hungry again? Also I can hold quite a bit of food down now? I'm worried about gaining? I have lost about 105 lbs. and have plateaued. I still need to lose 60 lbs. to reach my goal weight. I haven't lost anything for a couple months now? I just hate that I feel hungry so often? Usually I try and eat high Protein foods because it's supposed to keep you feeling full longer but I still feel hungry again about an hour after eating? Anyone having and/or have the same problem?

Hi, Yes, I'm 11 months out and I have been feeling like I'm starving! At first I was throwing up after eating & drinking so at 3 months post op surgeon did endoscopy and loosened the pouch. Well I have not lost any weight since then. In the first 4 months I lost 41lbs, that was great, but it stopped. I'm just lost, I'm so worried I have stretched the pouch and I sure don't want to start gaining weight. I want to lose at least another 20lbs. I take my Vitamins and Protein 60gms daily, but I'm still hungry. What can I do? I had RNY.

I had RNY as well. I never had any complications post op thankfully. My recovery went very smoothly. The worst I've had was throwing up from overeating. I don't think you've stretched out your pouch? My doctor told me that it's not possible to stretch out your pouch. There is scar tissue around the area where they reconnect your stomach pouch to your intestine. That tissue is what slows your food from digesting too fast. They did tell me if you over eat all the time the scar tissue will wear down and stop slowing down the digestion causing your food to pass a lot faster. So that's why you get hungry so often. Also I did hear that once you hit the 1 year post op mark your appetite comes back at full force. I can say that I totally believe that because that's when I started feeling hungry all the time. I think all we can do is make smart food choices. High Protein, low carb intake. Also stay active. Try and workout as much as possible. I have not exercised much since I had the surgery. I was losing weight so fast that I didn't worry about exercise. I've started working out recently. I hope it helps me lose those last 60lbs. [emoji4]

Yes Protein, complex carbs and good fats will help you stay full. I am 4 years out and still measure my food (also a little OCD lol). Sugar makes you more hungry and so does caffeine. All processed foods usually have added sugar. Take your time and chew slowly too. Protein also takes longer for your body to digest...just make good choices you can do this!

All I can really add to this conversation is to look for dense Proteins and add Fiber to your diet. The thinner the food the faster it will go through you, so chicken salad is less desirable for staying full than say bites of a strip steak or chicken cubes.

I am almost two years post op and for me my hunger is triggered by carbs. If I keep refined sugar out of my diet and my healthy carbs very low my hunger is almost non existent or normal.

I had some fudge on Mothers Day and was starving all day Monday.. It's took a while to remember I had eaten the fudge and that's what did it.

Dense Protein keeps me fuller much longer too!!

Also, logging and measuring my food helps keep me on track.

thank you so much for your responses! if I have anything carb or sugar even a small bite, I am hungry all day and I crave more. It has been very hard and I have gained back 15 lbs. I am struggling to get those things out of my system again and go back to not craving that junk. I know if I can get it out of my system I will be happy and healthy. I am so happy to have lost 100 lbs but I did feel better at 115 lost. I know I can use my tool to help me even at 17 months post op. RNY

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
