Mini gastric bypass in Belgium 20th April 2016

Recommended Posts

Hi

I'm due for surgery next week. Doing OK with the pre op diet. Getting very nervous about the surgery. Dr Chris de Bruyne is my surgeon and I've done so much research on him and the surgery. I've been struggling with my weight for 20yrs. 6 years ago I lost 6.5 stone through diet and exercise but struggled to keep it off. I'm now back to my weight prior to 6 yrs ago and worrying that the unhealthy diet I did previously will inhibit my weight loss after surgery. I'm travelling from Ireland and would love to hear anyone's story about traveling to Belgium.

Looking forward to getting to know you all!

Hi there,

Did your surgery go well? How are you getting on?

I had my surgery with Dr. Chris last Tuesday in Belgium and I live in Ireland as well.

Would be great to hear how it has been so far?

My story is quite similar to yours. Have been struggling for 18 years and gone through many cycles of losing a lot of weight, but then gaining it again.

I am on full liquids and it is going quite well. Getting a bit bored of the shakes though as I am on them since 2 weeks pre-op

Delighted to hear from someone else from Ireland on here! My surgery was so easy to recoup from. I was flying around in no time. I have lost 4 stone 7 pounds in 13 weeks and amazed at how well i am doing so quickly. I do struggle with food though as i was a fast eater prior to surgery so that has caused me to be sick a number of times so far. I've got no problem getting all my fluids in so haven't had any major problems. My biggest problem at the moment is not having clothes. Not complaining about that though! I'm trying to hold off buying much at the moment. How are you getting on now??

Hi Edelc, I am from Dublin and I will be getting the MGB in September with Chris de Bruyne, I am a fast eater and I am trying to practice slowing down before the surgery. How is the hunger after the operation ? and in the weeks after ?

Great to hear you have a date set so soon. It'll be a huge help to you by slowing down your eating before surgery. The hunger is non existant after surgery for me anyway. I have to force myself to eat. I've got no problem drinking though at all but for the first few week i struggled with fluids. I found it easier to drink room temperature then. However now i can tolerate all temps with no issues. I was only able to sip in the initial stages and was always thirsty and was wondering if I would ever be able to quench my thirst again. By week 3 i was flying though. If you want any info let me know. Wish i did it sooner!

Hi,

Oh now we are three from Ireland! Awesome!

I am two weeks out now and have lost 27pounds (weigh in was on Monday)

This is including pre-op weight loss.

Had my first puréed meal last night and it went down ok.

Had weetabix with added Protein Powder this morning and I think I had too much as I am struggling with pain now.

Will have a Protein Shake later and some puréed food tonight.

I am a fast Water too, but going by the 20/20/20 rule and hope it will come naturally at some point

20cent bite size, chew 20 times, then wait 20 seconds before the next bite.

liquids is no issue for me. Was up to 2 litres few days after surgery already.

Have zero hunger too. Only eat/drink calories based on the time of the day.

On Thursday I have my next appointment with my dietician. Let's see what she will say to my food log. Tracking on my fitness pal as it makes counting Protein a lot easier.

Oh and started on my Vitamins today.

Thanks Edelc and Hi Dlae,

did you also get your MGB in Belgium with Chris de Bruyne ? the 20/20/20 rule will be a massive change for me its normally a bag of twenties followed by 1 chew and the swallow is taking place while I take the next bite. No wonder I'm in trouble.

Hi Jackie, yeah it's a huge change for me too. But you'll pay with stomach pain so the learning effect should be quick ;-)

Yes, had my surgery with Dr Chris

He is super nice!

Edelc and Hi Dlae,

were you guys self-funded or did you get 'sponsored' by health insurance?

Well done, 38lbs in 'old money' , that's like not having to carry your check-in luggage everywhere. My wife has not exactly bought into the concept and is quite nervous but I think d-day will never come.

Hi Jackie,

Welcome to the club!

Hope you are feeling better by now! How has it been so far?

I am 2.5 months post op now and down 22.6kg. But not only that! Doing sports 5 times a week now and you know what? I love it! Who would have thought I would ever like sports?!

Feel like a new woman and I am loving it :-)

Wishing you a speedy recovery :-) all the best!

Well done, actually I got back home yesterday and I'm feeling much better in actually lost 4.5kg since last Thursday and 11 since I started the pre-op regime. I have to say at this early stage everything appears to be on track but I can't wait to actually eat again, the liquid part is great for the numbers though

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
