I write this with some trepidation, mindful of the gnashing of teeth and rending of garments that came in response to a person who recently had the temerity to discuss a bagel and cream cheese.

I have recently discovered Arnold whole grain/double Protein bread and am judiciously incorporating this into my post-op diet. One slice of this bread with 1.5 Tbsp Peanut Butter gives 13g of Protein, 3g of Fiber and 14g of healthy fats, for 2g of sugar and 240 calories. One slice with an XL cage-free egg over-easy in a non-stick fry pan gives 14g of protein, 3g of Fiber and 7g of healthy fats, for 2g of sugar, 180 calories and 240mg of cholesterol.

For me, having a slice of this bread with some high protein topping now and then breaks up the monotony of my diet.

That sounds great. What's the carb content? That would be my only hesitation bringing bread back in.

Total carbs are 16g per slice.

You had me at 13 grams of protein LOL actually my NUT seems to not be inline with many posts here. Whole grains are added back in after 3 months. They still use that plate where some folks learn about healthy eating and whole grains and starches still have a place at a meal. As an all or nothing yo yo dieters, I really feel this approach will work for me.

Today in pre op I had a bagel slim with greek cream cheese, cucumber, Tomato and a slice of deli turkey on each half. Both sides are 18 grams of protein....my understanding is maybe at one year I'll be able to do one half for 9 grams. I plan on days like that, my morning snack will be a Protein shake. My plan is to eat delicious and healthy foods asap while meeting protein and Water guidelines. I understand that won't happen for a while, but I'll strive to get there from week 3 on!

I'll take a look at the protein bread...do they make eng muffin and other bread products? How much "other stuff" that aren't nutrients come in ingredient list?

Of all the things I have given up in the last year, one thing I found I missed the most and have decided i will not give up is my morning fix of Peanut Butter and coffee. I didn't realize just how much this combination marked the start to my day. Before the sleeve I would have a whole bagel with a tablespoon of peanut butter on each half. Now I have one slice of Orowheat Oatnut bread with one tablespoon of peanut butter with my cup of black coffee. It isn't every morning. I probably have it 3 mornings a week. I don't eat much bread at all. One loaf of Orowheat will last me a month. Don't be scared of bread, just be aware of bread. I am coming up on some one year anniversaries for my beginning of pre-op diet and my surgery. I am very close to the 100 lbs lost mark. I have had bread in moderation and careful about the kind of bread and I have not exploded, imploded, nor has it hindered my weight loss or health. Sounds to me like you are being very aware of what you eat. Good job!

My NUT is on board with good carbs too (whole grains, fruit, veggies, etc). I have a slice of Sara Lee Delightful Wheat bread nearly every morning. I have definitely cut WAY back on carbs and always have more Protein than carbs for the day but as I near goal, I have definitely found ways to get a more balanced approach in my diet (but I also still have 1 Premier Protein everyday to ensure I get enough Protein ).

@@maggie409 - I love Peanut Butter and bread.< /p>

I too have given up eating bread like I use to (actually any carb).

I like Cereal too!!!

moderation is the key and being mindful of what exactly you are eating and how many carbs, how much sodium, Protein, etc...

don't forget to update your ticker!

great job, by the way, to losing almost 100 at +/-10months post-op!

I am rechecking with nut next week regarding post op post healing phase, but currently my goal is 50 percent carbs, 20 percent Protein, 30 percent fats. And protein must meet 60 to 80 grams per day. I am usually over that. Current calorie intake in preop phase is 1350 a day (for 2 lbs a week loss goal at my current weight). Wondering if the percents of total nutrition change (after mushees). She also said 15 grams or less of sugar per sit down for fear of dumping. A green apple is more than that! I need to review that part and get specifics on forever or just post op new...anyone here post post op experience dumping if you can eat a whole apple?

Barry that bread sounds pretty good. I am trying to limit carbs, but I occasionally have bread and this sounds like a good one.

@@Muted_Tummy - You likely will not be able to finish a whole apple after surgery. Better to have more Protein and supplement with fruit and vegetables. I am 10 months post-op and just yesterday was able to eat half an apple as a snack with some almond butter.

Have you tried the low carb tortilla. I don't like the wheat but they have a white variety that is pretty good and allows you to have something to make roll up sandwiches etc. I use to use them with just Peanut Butter and they are very low carb.

Two to three times a week I mix in steel cut oatmeal and I also use quinoa about once a week. Especially helpful the day before heavy lift days

@@Muted_Tummy - You likely will not be able to finish a whole apple after surgery. Better to have more Protein and supplement with fruit and vegetables. I am 10 months post-op and just yesterday was able to eat half an apple as a snack with some almond butter.

I have a third of an apple - it takes me all week to eat a whole apple. but I love it with some cheese as a snack.

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
