It depends on the surgeon whether or not they will perform VSG on someone with that low a BMI. Most surgeons have you at least fill out a medical history questionaire before determining your eligibility. The cost is also very dependent on the surgeon. I've seen prices as low as about $3500 and as high as about $7000.

My BMI was 29 and the first surgeon I really wanted wouldn't do it unless I had a BMI of at least 30. I refused to gain weight to lose weight, so I went with my second choice of Dr. Ramos-Kelly. He had done them before and we talked on the phone about it. He basically was like, well I don't recommend it for that low of bmi, but if you are intent on doing it, I am a good surgeon and will do it for you. It cost about $4800 in the clinic. He was a good surgeon, but I didn't care for him personally or his facility. I would recommend it being done in a hospital (Like Hospital Angeles) where if something really went wrong, you probably won't die. But it is more expensive there. You have to weigh it all and see what works best for you. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions!

I thought Dr. Kelly operated out of Hospital Angeles? Or is that only if you pay extra?

I hope this reply is not too late for you to see..

I had the orbera dec 14-june15.. It was great and I lost 10kg (22pd) in the first two months.. But the weightloss then stopped for the last 4 months. You can only eat small amounts. But I was happy to have lost something at least..

However, when that balloon came out I was hungry with a vengeance it was uncontrollable and I gained weight back quickly.. I had sleeve in October and my weight loss has been very slow but this is a forever journey..

Please, please be aware that I found the orbera just another expensive fad.. I hope it works for you.

It will definitely help with appetite whilst it is in. The problem for me was when it came out.. Just have a really good strategy in place, I thought I did, but obviously not

My BMI was 29 the day of surgery. I went to Dr. Ortiz in Mexico. Very clean and reputable facility. He is a good a surgeon as you find in the US. It was $6500 and my surgery was in October 2015' my weight loss has been slow beer I've lost close to 30 pounds since I started. Good luck to you. I hope you give the Weight control Specialist clinic where Dr Ortiz works a go. You be very happy.

@@JamieLogical - yes, the $7000 is if you get the surgery in Hospital Angeles by Dr. Kelly. $4800 is for him to do it in the clinic.

I had a BMI and went with Dr jaime Ponce de leon. He works out of (and may even own) INT hospital.

My BMI was 29.

I used Trish from WLS4 Better Life as my coordinator.

Dr Ponce is trained in the single incision procedure and that's what I had done. $5500 USD.

No regrets at all

Surgery January 9. Down about 22 lbs. Most was within the first 3 weeks. Somewhat stalled out now, but I know it will continue to come off. I have about 15 lbs or so to goal.

I had the balloon as well and it was not what I expected. I was hungry after the third month and I only lost 10 pounds. However it was a good idea to show I had a history of wanting to lose weight for the sleeve. It was a waste of money and I wish I didn't do it

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
