Sitting here in the hospital 24 hrs after surgery. Really questioning myself. The nurses are telling me I am doing great. But it hurts to drink. Hope to go home in a few hours. Is feeling down normal?

You just had a major surgery that altered an important organ in your body. I'm not sure anyone could expect to feel like a million bucks. I felt like crap the first 24 hours, but I expected to feel like crap. So was I down? No. Was I happy, cheerful, or full of optimism? No. I mostly wanted to sleep and do my walking and that's about it. The pain goes away as does the swelling until then just take it easy and follow your surgeon's directions.

I am 5 days out and completely understand. I did NOT expect to be down for whatever reasons. At day 5 I'm feeling, better. Not 100% but not so regretful. You wanted this for a reason, you went through everything for a reason and someone told me the other day no pain no gain, in our case no loss. Hang in there, you are in the worst of it now. Walking was my BFF even though it took a lot out of me. Hang in there ????

I was completely regretful afterwards. I even had several moments for a few months afterwards that I regretted it. This is COMPLETELY normal. Once you start getting used to your new stomach and new life (because yes, this is a sudden life change too) you will start feeling amazing. The compliments about how much weight you are losing will start really soon too and those definitely help get rid of the regret!

I'm still pre-op, scheduled for March 31st. I've come to believe that this is kind of like having a baby in the sense that you hear all the wonderful things and aren't exactly prepared for how the actually initial experience is. Part of human nature is to remember things better than they were so the stories we read don't always include every single bad detail. Also the reward in the end is so great that it's worth the sacrifices in the begin, at least that's what I'm hoping for :)

Hope you feel better soon and are able to practically forget this in six months.

I've never had a baby but that's exactly how I would describe it so far.

Once you get home you will feel better. For the first two days every sip I took made my stomach spasm. It does get better. by day 3 or 4 I was drinking all my fluids and Protein easily.

Laura, are you only drinking cold Fluid? In the beginning I only was able to drink room temperature fluid. Now, four weeks post off and now can drink any temperature fluid. Also, the heating pad was and still is my best friend any time my stomach is angry.

I was hating life for the first 8 days. But things began to improve noticeably on the 9th day. On day 13 now, and getting in and out of bed no longer a challenge, and my walks are lengthening. It's the long run that matters, in my opinion.

I am 7 days out. I went to Walmart yesterday but my husband wouldn't let me drive, lol. I am sore but I am able to get in and out of bed without any problems and I can even sleep on my stomach. I got 2,200 steps in yesterday, not the 10,000 I usually try to aim for but it's something. I won't hit 10,000 until I can exercise again. My problem is fluid/protein intake. I was finally able to drink 64 oz of Water yesterday. I am nowhere near 70 grams of Protein. It gets better every day. On Tuesday, day after surgery. I thought what in the world did I do. Just take it one day at a time.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
