A good birth control?

Recommended Posts

Hi ladies. I'm 36 years old and am 2 weeks out so unable to have sex with the hubs yet. My surgeon said for me to wait until I'm a month out. But I've been trying to figure out what a good birth control would be. I have PCOS so I've never been pregnant and have never had to use birth control. I know losing weight can cause women to become fertile and the doc doesn't want me getting pregnant for 2 years. I will make an appointment with my gyno next week, but I wanted personal opinions on birth control options. I'm really scared of any type because of the hormones but I have to use something and he hates condoms (I do too actually). Thanks in advance!

Hi I have PCOS and use nuvaring. It is a little more convenient than the pill and seems to cause less side effects compared to some of the pills I have tried. Best advice is to ask your gyno! Good luck!

i have PCOS, too. Have nexplanon implant and it's the best!!! PCOS patients do best with hormone based birth control, and this is my favorite type... have tried variations of the pill, provera 10 day pills, and IUD. This is best by far for me.

I totally agree If you have PCOS hormone based birth control improves (actually mask) symptoms. You might feel a little better.

I have pcos. I love love love my mirena. On my 3rd (1st was before kids, then got pregnant with my oldest first try, using medication, got another mirena, had another kid, and now I have my 3rd.) best thing ever.

And if you want to have kids later, pcos isn't as challenging as I was told it would be when I was younger.

Second vote for Mirena. (And for what it's worth, I have at least 5 or 6 friends / family that are in complete agreement that Mirena was best thing that ever happened.)'

The only thing better than my Mirena was my hysterectomy!

I love my Mirena, too. I had it inserted a couple months after I had my daughter and was still breastfeeding, so my options were the Mirena IUD or the mini-pill (and the mini pill sounded like a pain in the butt). Not sure what I would have chosen if I could have had the copper IUD, Mirena, or the implant, but I'm very happy with my choice. I'm one of the lucky ones that doesn't get period -- I've literally not had a period since I got pregnant 4.5 years ago.

Wow thanks ladies! Lots of you say Mirena so I'll ask my gyno about that. I really appreciate it highly. I'm ready to get some goody goody but have 2 more weeks before that can happen. Looks like he'll have to use a condom for now until I can get in to see her. Thanks again for the amazing replies!

I had the mirena and I loved it but I grew to hate it. I could not lose any weight with it regardless what I did. I had the band at the time and I would workout, eat right, and that scale would not budge. Right before having it I was losing weight. Then it stopped right after I got it.

I got it taken out and bam, down 10lbs a few weeks later bc the progesterone had to get out of my system.

I also have PCOS, and now I have a sleeve instead of the band. I'd do some research 1st. A lot of people claim that it causes u to gain weight. I'm going to go for hormone free IUD in the future

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
