...Squats to pick produce?......

If that involves cucumbers, I'm definitely watching that show! ;)

Thanks for the warning. I think I will skip that show. ???? Kristin had WLS? Where have I been?

I am 3 months out and wore my winter coat from last year for the first time yesterday. I could lap it over in the front. It was so comfy. I don't think I will get a new one just yet, but enjoy this feeling for now.

So glad I had this surgery.

I watched the first half, but not the second. I did find it interesting, but not surprising, that the high Protein, "paleo" type diet was the most successful as far as weight loss the first week. And the guy was very satisfied with the program, also. I mean, who wouldn't be when you can eat steak!

I like WW's. It's a great program, and just like with any other program, you've just got to follow the plan to lose weight and keep it off. I actually am a lifetime member, so obviously I wasn't successful with following program to keep what I lost off :P

My sister has lost almost 70 pounds on WW's as I was losing my 95 with the sleeve. She actually was very successful with it, and surpassed me as far as getting to a lower weight than me ( She's 133 at 5'6" now, and I'm 140-142 at 5'5") which really chapped my ass. But now I am curious to see if she can actually KEEP it off, as this is about her 3rd go round with it. It will be an interesting study as to which one of us is more successful avoiding regain. I plan on it being ME!

I busted out laughing when I read your post. Show her girl! I agree, my money is on you. I lost 12 pounds with Weight Watchers and then gained it all back in no time. I am ready for my sleeve!

LOL! I haven’t watched it yet, but maybe I will when I find it online somewhere. I did see an article about the trainers, and yes, I cringed when I read some of the tips from Clean Momma. It sounds like her goal is to make bad aspects of our lives worse (don’t like washing dishes? Try throwing in some calf raises and squats!), and to make good parts not-so-good (I can just imagine…”Going out with friends? Do a pushup every time someone says the word “the!”)

I don’t know quite what to think. All these weight loss shows are silly – can you really have a lasting lifestyle change within the short duration of a TV show, and is it a healthy environment? On the other hand, maybe these shows do change the contestants’ lives, and maybe they inspire a few viewers to get healthy, and maybe they give some good information and ideas along with the obviously questionable ones.

And I guess for all of us who made a different decision, we get to feel happy about ours!

Oprah is a fraud. She is the LAST person I would take any weightloss advice from seeing as how she's rich beyond measure, has a chief, personal trainer, glam squad ect..and still can't get her shit together. She could literally have someone exercise her body for her and she still can't keep it off longer than a few months. I don't know why WW would even support a multimillionaire failure in the weigh loss division. I don't trust them. They should pick a real human that has done WW and kept it off for a few years. They aren't repeatable in my opinion. As far as the show....no clue what it is.

Celebrities are just like you and me except they have money. It still does not take away their thoughts, feelings and struggles.

I often read on this site how people have had surgery and still struggle with head hunger. Yea weight may be reduced but for many the urge is still there. I can't fault anyone for their struggle. Hell how many personal trainers have I paid and lbs have I lost. If I want to hire a personal chef I can but that will not reduce my urge to have unhealthy foods. Many celebrities struggle with their weight. Like someone mentioned Kirstie Alley. It just shows you that they are real and have the same struggles that we do. Weight watchers is in it to make a profit and hey if Oprah is who bring in the big bucks then why not. Even if Oprah isnt successful, look how many people will join because of her. If people lose weight, become healthier, live longer because of Oprah's promotion then everyone wins.

It would be lovely if Weight Watchers actually produced long-term successes for its clients that were significantly better than dieting / exercising on our own. It really would be lovely.

But it doesn't. WW produces the same long-term success that every other commercial and non-commercialized diet produces -- 2% long-term success (meaning 2% of its customers lose X pounds and keep it off for 3-5 years).

http://www.ibtimes.com/weight-loss-most-commercial-programs-cant-show-long-term-success-study-exposes-25b-1871122

The best thing you can say about WW is that it costs less than Jenny Craig and other commercialized diet programs that require their customers to buy and eat only the company's branded foods to participate in the program.

So IMHO, there's nothing about WW that resembles "everyone winning," no matter who their current spokesperson is or what their financial return is. It's just yet another version of "My Diet Is Better Than Your Diet."

Obesity is a very complicated, mean b**ch.

IMHO WWs was great for me, for accountability, period.

When I tried to do the online it didn't work. Getting on the scale and having someone else write it down made it real.

I admit it, I watched this show and was laughing hysterically at the "clean momma" diet " expert. If it wasn't affecting the lives of people participating and of those watching, it would be pure comedy for me.

I'm so grateful to be on an eating plan and not some silly calories in- calories out diet. And the sleeve helps me be more aware of how much I'm eating.

As a mental health professional, I do feel compassion for Oprah, because of her past of being sexually abused. I truly believe that so many women and men who experienced SA have weight issues that never get resolved unless they receive treatment. Treatment can be traumatic too, so you can understand why many survivors would opt to " let the past be the past" but there's a cost involved in doing that as well.

Weight loss and fat are such complex problems- I see why success eluded me for so long. If I had been able to stick to an eating and exercise plan, I probably could have lost weight and kept it off. It's such a money industry and so many scams, it's no wonder that people rack up a lifetime of trying different diets and yo-yoing until their health is ruined. That was how it was for me. Fortunately the sleeve has given me a do over. Now if I could just beat my new shopping addiction...

I almost joined WEIGHT WATCHERS today because of Oprah. It would have been my sixth time joining. I need to do something to get back on track. But if it didn't work for me before it's not going to work now.

I didn't watch the show but used to do WW. I did lose 65 lbs on WW once but when I stopped following the program I gained it back. I'm almost 3 months post of RNY and have lost 70 lbs. I know this has to be a lifetime change. I used to be a fan of Oprah, but not anymore. Over the past several years I've gotten so tired of her. I wouldn't do WW now just because of Oprah. Yes, I do wish Oprah would get surgery, it may be her best bet.

I am a hardcore, healthy eating, nothing canned nothing boxed girl. And tell six months ago I did not even own a microwave. I know my diet is better than yours but guess what? I still can't loose and have a difficult time with maintaining my weight. I am not sure what it is, lack of Protein perhaps? (I am also a vegetarian" no one has the perfect way to eat. If they did they would be billionaires. My weight-loss surgon said it best. If there was a single diet in the world that actually worked... He would be out of business!!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
