Hey there!

I am in the pre-op phase of the VSG. Done with all of the pre-op testing and have a tentative surgery date of 1/11/16. I have 2 jobs and both of them make their schedules 2-3 months in advance. I put in request for the 2 weeks of 1/11-1/25 and most likely I will get what I want. Heres my problem, my surgeons office will not submit paperwork to insurance until 2 weeks before 1/11 which is sometime around Christmas...my work schedule for Jan will be done 1st week of Dec so Im a little worried by the possibility that I could be denied so close to the tentative date.

Therefore, Mexico is my Plan B if insurance doesnt approve (for whatever reason) because I dont want to be scrambling around at the last minute trying to explain to my boss why I needed to be added back to the schedule.

My questions:

-Are there any pre-surgical requirements? (lab work, tests, evaluations?, BMI Requirement)

-How much time in advance do surgeons need to book?

It's best to get that info from the surgeon since the requirements can vary program to program.

I was sleeved in July by Dr. Hidalgo in Puerto vallarta, Mexico. My BMI was 30 so I don't think there's usually a BMI requirement. I got my lab work done in the day of surgery. No other tests or evaluations besides an online health history form and a telephone consultation.

I was able to book within 2 weeks of the surgery.

Some people worry about surgery in Mexico. It was a clean hospital and I felt very safe. The surgeon was top notch. When I was released from the hospital, I spent the day on the beach and walking the beautiful city!

Oh, and of course there was a pre-op diet. It was only for 4 days (because of my lower bmi) but I did it for a week to lessen my pre-surgery worries.

Thanks for your input...I am not at all worried about surgery in Mexico. I work in a nice hospital in NYC and I've seen mistakes been made. Doctors all over the world are good, not just America.

It's good to know booking can be made 2 weeks in advance.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
