You need to do research and not just post a question on this site. There are multiple companies and doctors to choose from. Take your time and Google for information, recommendations and research various doctors and clinics.

When going to Tijuana you will go through a company or a surgeon directly. You will generally fly into San Diego and then be driven across the border for your surgery. You will stay a couple of days and then driven back to the airport to go home.

I had my surgery in May with dr. verboonen through the Obesity Goodbye Center. It was great. No real pain. No complications. My surgery cost $4,500. I paid $800 extra to have my gall bladder removed. I paid $1400 for 2 first class seats on the plane. I also took about $1,000 spending money but didn't really spend much of it.

Most surgeons or Medical Tourism agencies (depending on which you choose) will pick you up from the San Diego airport the day before your surgery and drive you across the border to your hotel/clinic/hospital. You need a passport to cross the border.

Once you have done your research and chosen a surgeon, then you can work out the specific logistics for your stay.

Lol to earlier comment. I have an appointment for gastric sleeve in Tijuana on December 29th. Couldn't think of a better way to start the new year. I'm paying to have my gallbladder removed ($1500) so my surgery total is higher than most going to Mexico, $5800. Plus $1200 for two round trip plane tickets. I'm going to take $500 in cash and have a credit card on me for emergencies. So much cheaper than U.S. The doctor I'm going to has very low complication rates and rave reviews. The hospital itself looks very clean but a little old fashioned. The Marriot looks so nice! I made friends with a girl on this site who took pics of the hospital rooms and corridors, the hotel lobby and rooms, plus the shopping. Once you contact the center, a coordinator will help you get scheduled, answer your million questions, and give you very detailed instructions. It took me 3 days of emailing, filling out health questionnaires and forms that to be approved by the doc, and making a $500 deposit to get on the schedule. So easy! You have to have a passport and pay the remainder with a cashier's check or credit card. I suggest the check because there is a fee for using credit cards. Hope this helps a bit. I was so overwhelmed when I first started researching surgery in Mexico.

Just get as much information as possible about your doctor and talk to old patients. Lots of people will share their story once you get to a specific surgeon. Plus most of the surgeons have a private FB page that you can join.

How does it work to travel to Tijuana ? Any help plz ????

My daughter and I had our VSG done in Tijuana through Medical Tourism and we had such a fantastic experience! My daughter went 2/26/14 and I did mine 5/26/15. The doctors and hospital staff were very gracious and took such great care of us. The liaison for Medical Tourism on both trips took us shopping and checked in frequently to make sure we had our medications too.

I know there is a concern regarding personal safety in Tijuana but at both facilities we felt very safe as well as at the hotels we stayed at. It should be a really good experience for you and I wish you the best of luck!

How does it work to travel to Tijuana ? Any help plz ????

I am in Tijuana Mexico right now. I went through BariatricPal with Dr Carlos Altamirano Cano. I had the gastric sleeve surgery done. He charges $4199 for the surgery with two years of follow-up nutrition support. Plus if finds a hernia during surgery, he'll remove it for free. I purchased the medical medical tourism insurance which made my total price $4399. I didn't need to use it but having a peace of mind was well worth it just in case I would of needed it. Everyone is great here. Very caring and respectful. Francisco came clean my room twice a day. It very clean here. I love it!! I feel blessed.???????? I have been taking pictures with everyone and tipping everyone for their wonderful service. I will be coming back in March of 2016 for cosmetic surgery and dental implants???????? join us on Facebook at Dr. Carlos Altamirano Cano private group. My name is Trisha Ann in the group???????? see you there.

I saw Dr. Juan Lopez Corvala at Angeles Health in Tijuana. It felt very safe. I lived in San Diego at the time so transportation was easy for me, you would probably fly into SD and then drive across the border. Do your research first, but I would definitely recommend it! The savings alone made it worth it.

I used Dr. Corvala as well on 9/29/15. I flew into San Diego on Tuesday morning and a driver came and got me at the airport and I was in surgery by 1pm (after doing a blood draw, ekg and paperwork). I left two days later. I have no regrets. The hospital was clean, the staff was great and I'm losing weight!!! My surgery was $5800. I've been to Mexico so I wasn't nervous. I bought a backpack with yoga pants and a sweatshirt for going home and a bathroom kit. The one thing I would recommend is Chapstick. My lips were dry. Good luck!

Mexico bariatrics was awesome. Great staff, great Drs(spk to and see you before and after surgery)! Picked us up and dropped us off at airport. Even took those who felt up to it on a tourist outing for a couple of hours. Hotel(new and fancy) knows exactly why you are there and accommodates you accordingly down to broth and Popsicles and more! Mexico bariatrics staff greets you as you walk into hotel to show you your itinerary for next day! Was the best experience I think we could've gotten!

I went back and forth about US v. Mexico and am scheduled for the sleeve on 12/28 in Tijuana. I live in San Diego, so no flight required. My weight doctor here said I can follow up with him.

If you are self-pay and already living in San Diego, then you'd almost be crazy NOT to go to TJ for the surgery. The price difference between the US and Mexico is huge, Mexico has amazing surgeons, and you don't even have to worry about travel the way most of us do. Glad that your US doctor will handle your follow-ups. My PCP here in the States was great about that as well. I think it's a huge help to know you have doctors backing you up at home.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
