2 Days post-Surgery off Diabetic medications

Recommended Posts

Surgery was October 20th, 2015 and post-surgery my blood sugars did spike which apparently is normal. I went home the evening of the 21st.

Upon release I asked for the sliding scale for Insulin and they said to call if my blood sugars went above 200 and we’d work that out then. You don’t want to chase around bloods sugars below 200 because you don’t want a dangerous low.

It’s been 3 days now and my blood sugars haven’t exceeded 150 during any of my before meal measurements.

I was taking both Metformin and 60 units of insulin 75-slow/25-fast twice daily. I am no longer taking these. This is simply amazing.

Another plus was a movement on the scale within 5 days I lost 9 pounds.

As we’d say up North – Holy Cow!

Amazing! Congrats! I was only on Metformin, but they sent me home without it and I haven't taken it since. My sugars the first month or so were still a little higher than "normal" (i.e faster was around 110), but my last fasting blood sugar at dr was 75!! Used to at 75 I would have felt horrible, but my body has gotten more used to it. Cannot wait for my A1C next month! You will be amazed at how it continues to improve!

Oh John that is FANTASTIC !

I have been diabetic for 25 yrs, 75 lbs overweight and on an insulin pump with a total of approx 75 u a day. Glucose readings were not good and A1C over 10.

I had my bypass on August 18, I am now taking slow release insulin, Lantus 34 units every mornings and walking 1 hr a day. I have lost 33 lbs and my sugar is fantastic. About 90 fasting in the morning or lower.

Also taking half my high blood pressure and cholesterol meds....

Isn't this surgery fantastic???

Congrats! It's a wonderful feeling isn't it? I was on 2 types of insulin, 3 oral meds plus 1 non insulin injection daily. Since the day of my surgery (I'm 6 weeks post op today!) I have only had to take 1 pill a day. The most awesome part was that yesterday I got the results of my first A1C since surgery........I went from 8.1 (even on all of those meds) to a 6.3! It's truly a great feeling.

Wishing you continued success and good health! :)

Congratulations to all! I am diabetic, and i know i will probably be able to drop my two metformin a day shortly after surgery, which is December 1. I'm very excited about it all, and very scared about the surgery and adjusting to the new relationship with food...but i am excited....

Thanks, LadyReyven. I have no doubt I'll be off immediately because my A1C is under 7 normally, and I have lower blood sugar numbers. When I lost 45 pounds with Weight Watchers in 2013, i was able to drop the pills for diabetes. But then...30 pounds have found me again and I'm back on metformin 2x a day. I was just tired of the up and down yo yo all my life...thus: RNY!

I'm so happy for you with your meds. it must feel wonderful! Good luck! How has the journey been thus far? I do worry about complications (Dec 1 surgery) but I worry more about my emotional state, I think; not being able to run to my drug of choice: food. : (

That is wonderful news to hear! I to am a pumper and looking to get off of it with surgery. Who managed your diabetic medications after surgery? Wa it the surgeon or your endocrine doctor?

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
