Orbera Success strategies

It's been 1 month since I got the balloon and still have only seen like a 2-3 pound weight loss. Very disappointing. Not a happy camper at all! I have about 30 pounds to lose and I really thought this would work. I know I'm not eating as much as I use too and it's very discouraging. Going to the doctor this week! Hoping for something

Have you had your Dr appt yet? What did your Dr say?

Yes I had my doctor appt yesterday and was not happy to say the least. They put me on a very strict diet. Basically I don't have many options and it's about 900 calories. Which I was eating only around 1000 anyway. In 2 weeks if there is still no chance they will put me on weight loss medicine. So frustrating not to see any weight loss.

So I went to Hawaii this last week and people complimented how I looked. I am glad I got the balloon.I'm only down 15 lbs but I only wanted to lose about 30-40 to begin with. Tomorrow will be 2 months. I made it through the holidays and two big vacations while losing or maintaining my weight. I go to new York this weekend and then after that, I will be focusing on losing the other 15 lbs.

People have begun noticing my weight loss. (I lost 20 on my own before the balloon and then stalled and started to gain weight back) I am down 29 lbs in a year and I'm so happy people can finally tell.

That would be so frustrating. Did he say anything like, "I should have filled it up more?"

No she didn't say that at all. Let me tell you I'm not very nice when I'm in there lol. I will ask when I see her again or I will call about that. Thanks for asking!

I saw my thyroid doctor today who said my thyroid levels are perfect so I can't blame the lack of weight loss on that! He gave me a long boring lecture on cultural changes that have cause obesity to sky rocket. And I should be thrilled with a 1 pound per week weight loss. Really?? Not at the price I paid! LOL. Well, I can happily say I am fully adjusted to this abdominal intruder. No more nausea in the morning. And I only get the severe cramping if I eat more than Soup or shake for dinner.

I'm sorry both of you have had less than desirable results.

This balloon is a pain and I almost had it taken out a few weeks ago, but I hope I can see some more success.

I feel like the balloon works BECAUSE it makes me feel sick. The days I don't feel sick, I can eat almost normal portions. I try not to, but I don't really feel full. It just keeps me from feeling hungry. ( I am probably not making sense.)

Basically, nothing ever sounds good, so I don't feel like eating. Most of the weight I lost came from the first two weeks when I was so sick I wanted it out. And again a few weeks ago when I almost had it taken out. Anyway, just some random observations.

hmmm...you are probably right!! I feel great today and have been hungry all day! Maybe I should do a downward dog and get this thing to shift to make me nauseas again!

Ha ha!

I really do that type of thing sometimes! Because if I feel too good, I eat more.

Has anyone taken prescribed weight loss medicine? If so what and did it work?

I took phentramine pre-balloon. I lost twenty lbs. I did that on half a dose as well. I liked it but you can only take it for a few months because your body gets use to it.

It was about 3 months. I only took half a dose because that was working for me and that's what the doctor told me to do in the beginning. And even then I skipped every few days. So I would take it for 3 or 4 days in a row and then I would forget to take it. Then I would notice that I would start to feel tired so I would take it again. It gave me energy and made it so I wasn't hungry.

So glad I found this forum! I had Orbera inserted exactly one month ago today. All in all its been OK, but definitely not easy. Nausea and some vomiting the first few weeks, allergic reaction (hives) to the nausea patch I was given, which was really unpleasant. Now, my biggest problem is that I don't feel great and have NO energy (a lot like morning sickness when I was pregnant with my kids). I've lost 13 pounds so far, and am happy with that, but really need to start exercising again. Started at 185, want to get down to 130. I was not given much guidance from my doctor about what, when, how to eat. From poking around on the internet, I've figured out not to ever drink while eating, no fried foods, focus on Protein. Ive also found that any kind of alcohol does not agree with me, so while I miss my glass of wine before dinner, dont have those calories to worry about. Are most of you exercising regularly? How and when is best?

I've had my Ballon for 3 months now and just went back to the gym about 3 weeks ago! I felt the same way as you for the first 2 months! I was advised by the nutritionist to just lift weights in the beginning and don't worry about cardio too much. Since I've been back at the gym I've been able to take classes but I do feel nauseous some times. I find that chewing gum helps me get through my workouts!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
