I only drink the Green Tea Lemon too. Even my 15 year old son tries to sneak a glass of it instead of making his daily Protein shake after football practice.

@

I love the SF pops. I only have a box of the one with orange, grape, cherry. I have 1/2 every night while I am walking around the house in the dark and then the rest in the morning. It's the only thing I can bit, chew on now!

Hey, I just ran down the left side of screen. I seem to be the only lapband person who posted in this topic. In the band world, we're advised not to drink our calories (except the for a brief period right after surgery). From the start I had no interest in liquid Meal Replacements. I'd much prefer to eat good food and enjoy good taste and the familiar, "normal" act of chewing.

Please tell me what purpose these drinks you're discussing serve. Are they primariiy a source of Protein? If so, why? Wouldn't you rather eat, enjoy the sensation of chewing, taste real food?

I'm curious, not critical.

Laurie

Protein drinks are a way to get a lot of Protein in with very low carbs and moderate calories. Back when I was banded, I was not informed of the benefits of a high protein/moderate carb diet and did not use Protein Drinks. There are still surgeons who don't want you to drink your calories. I dunno, I am maintaining a pretty massive weight loss (half my starting body weight) and I still have 1/2 or 1 premier Protein Drink daily... usually in my coffee plus a few sips and I call it Breakfast.

I am 4 years band to sleeve revision.

I am not wild about ANY of them.

The ones I could tolerate where premier chocolate or strawberry. The vanilla is vile but works as a base for a smoothie or a fake latte.

For ones that start as a powder, I found the nectar Syntrax the only ones i could BEAR to drink. My my main complaint is they weren't very "satiating" as a person with a mature sleeve. They have lots of crazy flavors - the best ones in my opinion was the vanilla bean and I think the chocolate was okay. I don't use it anymore but I did during the weight loss phase.

The best way to try the Syntrax product is get their sample pack. It used to be you could get it for the price of shipping which was a great way to try before you buy. I recommend calling the company and asking.

I bought my big jug powder of the vanilla bean from Amazon as that was cheapest at the time.

Jane, thanks for your comments on why you use the Protein drinks. I guess it's simply a matter of preference. I know I'd be unhappy with them.

The greatest utility of Protein Drinks for sleeved and gastric bypass patients is obviously for use early on (first few months post-op) when the sleeve and the pouch are still healing.

As a band patient, you wouldn't know this, but takes weeks (or a few months) post-op before patients are even allowed to eat any kind of meat. There are stages like Clear liquids, full liquids, purees, soft foods that we must endure before being allowed to eat denser foods.

Thereafter, some patients still use Protein Drinks from time to time to get all their Protein in and when dense protein isn't available or convenient, e.g., during air travel, after strength-building exercise, and on go-go-go days.

If you are a tea lover the nectar Tea with Lemon is great...the smell not so good...but the taste is good...Vitamin Shoppe has packets of different kind you can try. Before buying the pounds.

That stuff is horrible! Was given a sample bottle by my NUT and hated it. Sorry OK Pirate, but it was coconut. :(

Anyway, I took it home and told my family it was great just so they would take a sip and I could see their faces contorted from the flavor. So, not so good for taste, but was fun.

@@VSGAnn2014 maybe you could enjoy yours that way? Lol

I appreciate the fuller details. I'd forgotten that sleeve patients wait a good month to go beyond liquid. Down the line I may be discussing revision to sleeve with my surgeon, so the reminder is welcomed.

I like the Isopure tea flavor, but only mixed 1/2 and 1/2 with a glass of real tea and with lots of ice.

I love love love the Syntrax Nectars. I like the fruit flavors mixed with Water. I love the Cappuccino flavor and that is my Breakfast drink most mornings. I drink them out of an insulated tumbler with a straw and I think not smelling that Protein drink smell makes them taste better, but really most of the fruit flavors are like Jolly Ranchers. The Crystal Sky flavor is just like a Blue Rasberry Jolly Rancher and the Green Apple is just like the green ones : )

Sorry to hear about your experience. I think one of the most frustrating things about weight loss surgery is needing to find Protein supplements that taste okay! It’s so frustrating because what works for someone else may not work for you; what you like before surgery might taste terrible post-op; and as you search for a powder that works, it’s hard to forget about all that money you’re throwing away!

Some of the members have given suggestions about mixing it with other drinks like G2 (or Powerade Zero or any sugar-free drink). To avoid wasting money, you can try buying your shakes and other supplements online at a store with a good refund or exchange policy. Some stores let you return or exchange products if you’ve only tried a single serving.

WLSResources/Clothing Exch: the sleeve is a completely different surgery than the band. Protein Shakes or powder are unavoidable since patients can’t eat food until at least 2 weeks post-op. After that, they can only eat a little at a time, and most need shakes for weeks or months after to meet their needs.

@@Alex Brecher - Dang straight. I did Protein drink research pre-surgery, and I have several buckets of protien powder sitting in my cupboard that I wish I could do something with. But I found what I like, thankfully before surgery so that was one less thing on my mind.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
