At what point can you have mashed potatoes?

I think closer to 2 weeks during pureed and soft food stage

Mashed potatoes were never allowed on any weight losing phase I went through. They're high carb and have no Protein at all.

Strange to think of them being recommended by anyone's NUT or surgeon.

Week 3.

BTW, can we eat brown rice? If so, when?

You can have brown rice in small amounts but believe it is at least 6 weeks. I haven't tried it yet. Too scared of it getting stuck (but I'm a chicken because of other things that haven't gone down well. I haven't tried any bread either)

My program could have them (preferably with some added Protein powder) anytime during the soft phase, which was the entire first month for us. Likewise, rice and Beans were on the list, but docs vary so much on what they allow when that you really need to look at your own book rather than depend upon others here (I know that doesn't help under the circumstances!) I would go ahead and get them and if you can't have them yet they will keep until next week or the week after.

My nutritionist said mash potatoes were not a good choice during weight loss. Its so starchy and full of carbs. My plan from the beginning was to not eat all those foods that kept me fat: mashed potatoes, rice, bread, cheese, Desserts, processed food, etc. I know many of you eat cheese, but I am not satisfied with 2 oz., even with the sleeve. So, I just don't eat it at all.

Even though I've lost 150 pounds and have been at goal since May, I still hesitate to eat foods like mash potatoes. I'm not going back to the fat person I use to be no matter what.

I was allowed to have them during the pureed stage and after that, they are off limits

Thanks, all.

I am only on Day 6, so they are off limits for now.

Starting about 3 days before surgery, I quit tolerating all Protein. Since surgery, it's been even worse. I have a few more brands and ideas, but I'm quickly running out. It has all come right back up. I am so weak and thought maybe even a few bites of "real food" might help, but looks like I have several more days, and even then foods like mashed potatoes may not be ideal. (That's a good point I hadn't considered.). Does Week 3 begin on Day 15 or 21?

So in our post op class our NUT told us that during puréed stage, mashed potatoes were ok. It's not something you should count on eating as part of your every day diet, but during the puréed stage when you are healing it is perfectly fine and you can spike it up with Protein and not eat it with gravy or butter or anything like that mixed in it. Just potatoes and milk. As for life after hitting solids. It shouldn't be used because it is high in starches, but also because our pouches hold better and stay full longer with solid foods and mashed potatoes are thin enough that it will empty pretty quick leaving you hungry again sooner. You should aim for more solid things like chicken, beef, pork, etc then veggies and if after that, there's any room left you should aim for a good starch like brown rice or whole grain bread and not something like potatoes or white rice.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
