How soon after surgery for exercise

Recommended Posts

I have surgery tomorrow and while I am not planning on running a marathon I am wondering when, what and how much exercise I should look to incorporate once I am sent home I will be home for six weeks starting today. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Also, I own an elliptical machine - would you say that's equivalent to walking, or should I just stick to the good ole' normal walking - one foot in front of the other.

Thank you :)

The elliptical is much more strenuous than walking. My surgeon said 3 weeks until more than just walking but IDK I think for me that may be too soon. I am just going to listen to my body. So I say walk, walk, walk!!

Mine said to wait for clearance, but usually around 6 weeks post-op. My fitness specialist at the weightloss center told me that I should continue doing stretches about 3 weeks out, but nothing that would get me down on the floor or crunching my stomach.

Walk walk! I'm 11 Days post op. Woke up feeling so great this morning that I hopped on my bike. Couldn't help myself, she was just standing there staring at me in the garage. Felt great. But by afternoon my stomach was sore and I slept for 3 hours

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
