Personal Style -- How will I dress as a thin woman?

Recommended Posts

I was inspired to make a special Pinterest board, after considering this question. I just started it, so I don't have too much on it yet, but this is a representation of the styles I want to wear when I get closer/reach my goal. The more I add, the more excited I get! I really never got this excited about fashion in my life. From a distance yes, but for myself...this is a very new sensation! I added my main pinterest page too, with all my boards. In case anyone would like to follow, I will follow back. :)

@,

Feeling the style100%.

I like the edgy punk factor. Love the black. I think I'm going for a "If Lenny Kravitz were a woman" sorta look. LOL Definitely some overlap.

Thanks for sharing.

You think I can wear steam punk skirts to work in an office environment?

I don't know what kind of office environment you work in. But if you work in a typical corporate organization, you'll certainly "stand out."

So, no.

Eh, I work for the Government.. I have a sleeve tattoo that I'm working on my right arm.. Some people dress up, some wear jeans and tshirts every day.. I would stand out, but I could still look good.

2 years post-op and I still am deciding on my overall style. I tend to stay with classic styles for work . After leaving the plus size world I was delighted to never see another bedazzled tunic or sparkly t-shirt. Some of the clothing found at Lane Bryant/Torrid/Catherines was expensive but looked cheap to me. My styles leans towards banana Republic/Ann Taylor and I can find deals that look comparable for 1/2 the price at places like H & M and Ross

Do not get stuck dressing only in what is considered as " age appropriate". I am not saying dress like a 16 yr old girl, but be aware that many trendy styles can be adapted to a more mature woman without dipping into the old lady zone.

A great fitting pair of jeans is a worth spending a few extra dollars. As mentioned previously, a good bra and/or Spanx is a godsend. Nothing constricting but a nice Shapewear tank is amazing under clingy fabrics. Avoid skin tight clothing as well as oversized, You will have to spend sometime trying all various styles to see what flatters your body type. Also, do not be afraid of color.

Also, from my observation some items that "frumpisize" a woman are :

1) The mid calf wide leg capris in pastel colors. Matched with a boxy capped sleeve t- this outfit screams old lady

2) High waisted jeans

3) Off the shoulder t's with animal print/floral tunics/anything with shells/shiny beading or sequins in the daytime

4) Twinsets /cardigans in matching colors

5) The wrong kind of floral prints

One thing I did was spend a day by myself at the mall. I went and tried clothes all day and took pictures of myself in the dressing room. Try styles you would never have tried, especially for jeans. Focus on your best features. If you have amazing legs, try a shorter cut skirt. If you stick with neutrals try to add a color. There is no pressure to buy either.

Your style will come in time. I look online constantly for ideas and try to adapt to my budget. Enjoy !!!!

I love twinsets.

And they do not "frump" me. ;)

But I agree with your other suggestions. :)

I just love this topic. This is the kind of thing I can sit and enjoy thinking about as I move along in my journey. Even though I am not at that point, it motivates me to think about the days to come. My dream style starts as simple as being able to wear a black ribbed turtleneck with jeans. I have actually started a folder for outfit goals that I fill with photos as inspiration for the days ahead.

Overall I would say that my style will be natural. Having said that, it is just as clear to me what I don't want to be my style any more..... no more clothes with flowers. I have sworn them off... and no more embroidery of "stuff" on my shirts or pants either... nada..

Just read through all the comments on this topic. This is something I am currently obsessed with! I've found a blog that has really helped me, it's http://fiftynotfrumpy.blogspot.com/ For those of us of a "certain age" she has great tips. I'm fortunate in that I have 4 sisters that are all different sizes and I've been able to "shop" in their closets as I've changed sizes. I go to thrift stores, clearance racks, Old Navy, Walmart, etc... but I have gotten much more particular as I've gotten smaller and have more to choose from. Definitely a good problem to have.

Good luck to everyone on this journey of finding the style that suits you!!

P.S. I've also enjoyed playing around on pinterest and the website polyvore.com. Mostly to remind myself of what I want to pair together, but looking at all the ideas too.

I love this topic! I'm 51 and spent the last 3 years at a women's college with primarily traditional age students. I loved seeing the various styles on various shaped bodies. What I loved most was the confidence these young women had wearing their clothes. It brought out my inner wild child/sophisticated mama. I wear clothing based on my mood and the outing. I love my twinsets, boiled wool cardigans, and pencil skirts. I also love my leather pants, denim jackets and flowy maxi-dresses. I tend to dress for the occasion.

. As fall approaches, I have a fabulous long leather coat, think Matrix, that I wear with these awesome chunky heeled boots that have buttons up the front.

I used to sew outfits for myself from outfits I saw in magazines and in the stores. I'm so excited to set up my spare room and do this again. I have some great material that I purchased awhile ago that will be perfect for BoHo chic. Fringe and all!

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
