Horrible time after bypass :(

Recommended Posts

I had my bypass on the 7th and I've been so sick. I can't keep most things down. I have terrible pain anytime I do eat. I'm so miserable I've been to the emergency room twice. Meeting with ny surgeon on monday. Wishing ud never done this. Was anyone else this sick the first few weeks if so did it get better

Have you seen your surgeon since your surgery? What does he/she say?

I did not experience this and I do not think it is common. Some people experience a blockage in the plumbing.

In some cases, scar tissue or inflammation can narrow the new connection between the stomach and intestine. This is called a stricture. Strictures usually develop four to six weeks after surgery, and affect less than five percent of bariatric surgery patients. Patients with strictures will notice that they are progressively less able to take in fluids and food. Strictures can be treated with an endoscope, which is a thin, flexible tube with image sensors and special tools at the tip. A doctor will use an endoscope with a tiny inflatable balloon at its tip to open the stricture.

Are you eating slowly and chewing to mush? @@bookworm831

Pain doesn't sound good. If you are drinking or eating too fast, it will cause pain. You have to be very diligent in eating slowly, chewing thoroughly and eating the right things. I have had a lot of trouble keeping meats down at 7 weeks out and I felt pretty crummy my 3rd and 4th week, but I think I am starting to figure it out. What kind of foods are you eating? Once you vomit, everything gets swollen again, so you have to go back to liquids for 48 hours and then pureed for 48 hours and then you can progress (if you are at the stage for other foods). I have decided to stay on soft/pureed foods until 8 weeks before I try more sold foods again (following a rough week earlier this week). All that said, if you are doing all these things and still have pain, call your surgeon for sure.

The feelings of wishing you hadn't done this are very normal. I still have those days occasionally but they are getting farther apart and hopefully will be gone soon. Hang in there!

I'm so sorry bookworm. Please let us know how it goes. I had bypass on June 30 (1 week before you) and I was miserable until about last week. I questioned why I did it too. It's normal. I had my first vomit bout tonight so I'm going back to liquids for a bit :(

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
