Never hungry 15 months post WLS - am I the exception?

Recommended Posts

15 months post surgery and I still never really experience hunger and frequently have to remind myself to eat or I will go the entire day just eating one Protein Bar. I'm now below my goal weight at 148 (surgeons's goal weight for me was 160 and my goal was 150.) Am I alone here? Do others struggle with not having an appetite?I was never an emotional eater and gained my weight due to PCOS so I don't turn to food for comfort. If I'm not hungry, I don't eat. It's just ironic to be on the other end having to remind myself to take in food. Funny how the universe works....

Oh gosh I hope I have that problem when it's my turn! LOL Is it miserable or is this just one of those side effects that has a pleasant outcome like it sounds? If it isn't a bad thing, I wouldn't mind having that extra help for sure. Of course I've got 7 built in reminders to eat(my kids) so I in theory can't forget to eat all day because I have to fix them meals. I could always send them to your house if you get too skinny! :D

At 11 months out, I go through spurts. Some days I'm starving (especially work out days) and have to be very careful not to over eat. Then I have days where I'm not hungry at all, and food almost repulses me. Today is one of those days. I have to actually force myself to eat today. I don't know how long my spurts will last, but I'll take the "non hungry" days ;)

I have the opposite problem. I did not lose my hunger. I am 3 weeks post-op, and I get hungry about every 2 hours. So, I don't forget to eat. It's good my stomach is small. That keeps me in check because I feel funny when I am full. We all have our own journey. I imagine there will be those who wish they had your sleeve. Enjoy it!

I should probably clarify... The journey has changed throughout the process. I do remember being hungrier during the losing phase. It's been more of an issue now that I'm at goal weight. It feels really weird to be "complaining" about it and I wouldn't if I didn't notice my hair starting to shed again! I haven't lost much in the last 6 months. Maybe 6 pounds, so I'm more worried about feeding my body the proper nutrition. I was just curious to hear from some other veterans to see if the hunger hormone came back the farther out from surgery they were. I think that has more to do with it than the size of my sleeve.

I'm like Babbs, there are days where I am starving and have to be careful to not eat everything in sight and there are days where I have no real interest in food. I also have days where literally everything I eat makes me sick and days where nothing makes me sick. I am a little further out than you at 22 months, although I was an emotional eater and I find that I still struggle with that. It's like that quote from the Austin Power's movie...I eat because I'm sad and I'm sad because I eat. I'm not sad anymore since I'm at goal, however there are times where I feel like I'm hungry when in reality I'm just anxious or stressed.

Hi Bluesea71' I also have PCOS, just wondering if symptoms go away after weightloss? I'm 55 yrs old diagnosed since mid 20's?

No, I have the lap band which needs to be adjusted....once that was completed, about 4 months after surgery, all my hunger and cravings vanished...as did my interest in food or eating....it slowly started with a change for my "Tastes" of foods.

That was over 4 years ago, still the same....

I have to remind myself to eat. But then it's not for eating sake, but to get my Protein.< /p>

Hey there - which symptoms in particular are you wondering about? :) PCOS never fully goes away but some less pleasant symptoms of it become more manageable. Weight management for one, has becomes Easy! Easy! Easy! (Well, at least for me at has!)

My hunger never really went away although the intensity of it changed. In the beginning, my stomach was delicate and even when hungry, I ate sparingly and carefully. Now at 14 months, I get hungry about every 2 to 3 hours, depending on how dense the Protein in my previous meal. So far, my capacity continues to be greatly reduced and my hunger is more manageable than before.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
