Osteoarthritis- pelvic and hip bones pain, is anyone experiencing this?

Recommended Posts

I have been having pains in my hip bones for a year now. I did the sleeve surgery 5 years ago, is anyone experiencing this? I did an X-ray and the doctor said it is osteoarthritis, although I am in my 50's, am wondering if this is as a result of the surgery? Did the surgery speed things up?

To answer your question, I do not believe it is a result of the surgery. I hate to say it, but it sounds like age is catching up with your hips.

I've had hip pain for at least 15 years (I'm 59), but only because it is referred pain from what's going on in my lower back - osteoarthritis, bulging disc, facet joint syndrome.... The last x-rays of my hips showed NO arthritis. Also, I've frequently had bursitis in my hips. A day does not go by that my hips don't hurt, some days it's just not as bad as other days. I still exercise and get around well. Standing in one place more than a few minutes hurts a whole lot more than anything else. Since I have a desk job, I do make myself get up and walk around the office frequently throughout the day. If I'm not careful, I can be seated at my desk for 2 hours and not realize it's been that long since I got up out of my chair. I read recently that anyone with a desk job should get up and move around for 5 minutes every hour (at the least). Because my hip pain can disturb my sleep, any pain meds needed are taken just before going to bed. During the day I push through it and use Tylenol. Moving around helps the most because it keeps my joints warmed up.

I hope you can find some relief that works for you!

It, most likely, has nothing to do with the surgery. On the contrary, you are probably lucky to have had the surgery when you did, as carrying extra weight will exacerbate arthritis. The weight, may even have been a contributing factor to it's development. MrsSugarbabe is right, moving around will help. Your doctor can offer further advice on treatment and slowing the progression.

As a CPED (Certified Pedorthist) I think TheRealMeIsHere! makes a good point. Your feet are the foundation of your entire skeletal system. If you are a bit of an over-pronator it will put excess stress on ankle, knee, hip and back. Assuming after 5 years, you are at/close to goal and still exersizing regularly, I would check on the amount of support I am getting. You might want to see a Podiatrist or find a CPED in your area.

Hi All,

I am 56 and just had sleeve surgery 06/24. Thank goodness the rough part is behind me! :)

I have been reading this thread for the last month or so and finished it. I have really enjoyed it and the info so thank you to all who have contributed!

I just wanted to throw this out there. I have had trouble with my hips off and on through the years and when I have trouble I take 3000mg of MSM a day and it has really helped.

MSM is something the body makes less or as we age.

Good luck!

Osteoarthritis is a result of long term wear and tear. In our heavy days we put more stress on our joints. It would be probably worse and sooner if you hadn't had the surgery.

Oooh! It is great I found this thread. I have lost 80 lbs since my surgery in February. For the past few months (6?) I have been tender/achy in my left hip, and, infrequently, in my right. My husband said I was limping. I had a broken ankle about a decade ago, and this often caused a limp when I was tired. It really got uncomfortable after a week vacation with heavy walking. Finally spoke to the doctor about it. She took some x-rays of both of my hips and pelvis. THE VERY NEXT DAY, the nurse called me back to report that the doctor diagnosed SEVERE arthritis in both of my hips! I asked "Severe?" She said "Yes." I asked, aghast, "Both?" She repeated "Yes." Well holy shit! I have been walking around like a confused, scared Zombie, for the last week. I see the Orthopaedist on Thursday, so I will know more then. I am 52.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
