Spouse involvement

How involved is / was your spouse? Mine is going with me to my first appt today. I am not the kind of person who would typically drag my hubby with me but I am going to need his support and want him to have the same info as me.

My hubby went to my orientation, he asked questions and is very supportive of me, not just with this, but with anything I need support with. He is my rock! We have had discussions about surgery for years. He patiently listened and waited until I finally made the decision for myself.

He's with me all the way!

My husband went to 2 information sessions with me at the 2 local hospitals. The first one I did not qualify for the surgery at the time due to low BMI and no co-morbidities. That hospital eventually stopped doing bariatric. I eventually went to Barix Clinic which is over an hour from my house. My doctor was the same one that who did the information session at the hospital that discontinued it.

However, my husband did not come up to Barix Clinic until until the day of surgery. He did drive me to my first post-op visit due to the distance. He is still very supportive and reminds me to chew. He has cruised around this board some. He has asked lots of questions when I come back from appointment.

I am so fortunate to have my husband by my side. I was nervous at first about what his reaction would be. I don't know why. He has always supported me in anything I have wanted to do or try. He is attending all visits with me. He told me last night right before we went to bed that he would change his lifestyle to help me meet my goals. How could I ask for more? He has told me that he wishes I could see myself through his eyes and see what a beautiful person I was inside and out. I mean, come on, does it get any better than that? I wish everyone had someone in their life that supports me the way he does. Even the hair brain ideas I get at last minute about stuff that I look back on and wonder what I was thinking! ????

My husband was supportive all the way and still is. When I told him that I was thinking about doing the surgery he said, "Good, I found you so late in life I want a long time with you." He went with me to my consult and my first nutritionist visit (they were the same day). I chose to attend support group meetings before and since, he has gone to every one.

When I was doing my research and compiling recipes for after surgery he said "this is great cos I want to eat healthier also and it will keep me on track" He already eats well and goes to the gym every day.

He bought me a smoothie blender for my Protein shakes, and he bought us a treadmill for home.

He helps me do my measurements and celebrates every pound I lose in a truly happy way not in a way that makes me feel bad about having that pound in the first place. He points out changes as he sees them because its hard for me to see them.

I couldn't ask for a better husband and partner in everything.

I too have a VERY supportive hubby and I cannot imagine NOT having him support me. This is a life long decision. Adult son at home is supportive as well.

My husband and I did the surgery together on the same day. So I can definitely say keep him as involved as you can because it will make life so much easier if you are both on the same page and can discuss any issues that may come up.

My husband has not gone to any appointments with me, but only because he has had to work. I did sit him down with my binder of information and walk him through the pre-op diet, the surgery itself, and the post-op phases. He'll be coming to the hospital with me for surgery (on Monday!!) and is planning to be off for a few days while I'm in the hospital and recuperating (but my mom is also flying out, so he doesn't have to deal with me alone! )

He's been very supportive--he knows how miserable I've been, and he wants me to be healthy and happy. He struggles with his weight, too, so he is looking at it as a chance for him to eat better, as well. He is doing Herbalife shakes while I'm doing my liquid diet, eating his "real food" meal for lunch so that he's not scarfing down dinner in front of me while I'm drinking yet another Protein shake.

I think it would be really tough to do this without spousal/family support--I feel really bad for the people whose spouse or other family members are resistant to the idea of surgery or, even worse, try to undermine the person's efforts.

My husband has been behind me 100% , he didnt go to my appointments but was there when i needed him to hold my hand, he is also a nurse so i had his knowledge on my side when it came to healing. we also knew the nurses that cared for me which made me feel very comfortable.

he does all he can to help me, he also knows this journey is mine and ours, not just about him or me as individuals, i have cried more than once about this decision and he holds me and reassures me. he met me at my highest weight and does also help me Celebrate every loss, but he did take the scale away

My husband did not like the idea at first. He's heavy too, and I think he's worried about losing his pig out buddy.

He's been very supportive during the actual surgery process. I'm hoping he'll start thinking about having it done himself.

My husband has been fantastic. He has looked after me and as he is a chef has taken it upon himself to jazz up my puree which has helped get it down

I'm not really sure what to think about my husband, lol. I didn't take him to any appointments because I'm so used to doing everything on my own. I later regretted that because I then had to sit down and explain everything to him. He has the "happy wife, happy life" philosophy so he's good with anything I decide.

I feel bad because my weight has caused some fertility issues and that is a huge motivating factor to get this all taken care of. Makes me feel like it's my fault we haven't been able to start our family. He plans to take time off when I do have my surgery and stay with me at the hospital. I think deep down I know he will be more then supportive but in typical male mode he's not very expressive with his feelings! Drives me crazy!
