I'm now 25 days post op. For 3 days I plateaued at 271; that didn't bother me. Yesterday I gained a pound and am still 272 today. I began to add a bit of food; turkey sliced thin and mashed potatoes, but only 4 oz. I'm also not reaching 60 grams of Protein each day although i'm using shakes. Any suggestions?

Your weight will fluctuate day to day. If your not reaching your Protein goals then you shouldn't be eating mash potatoes. And frankly I think mash potatoes are a bad choice anyway. Stick to side dishes that will give you protein...not useless carbs and calories. I often eat cottage cheese as my side. Now that I can eat two ounces of dense protein I will eat good veggies such as green Beans, asparagus, etc.

Crosby is right. Do yourself a humongous favor. Do not get on the scale every day. It will save your sanity. As long as your following the rules (high Protein, low carb, lots of water) you will be okay. I've only been on the scale 4 times since my surgery. That's when I go to the doctors office.

The biggest thing is making sure you get your Protein and Water. I have weighed myself everyday since I had my surgery at the end of September.

If you are going to do that, you have to remember that your body weight fluctuates everyday. You probably did not gain a pound but it is Water weight. It takes an excess 3500 calories to gain a pound. I can almost guarantee you that you did not do that.

If you are going to weigh daily you have to make sure that you don't let it freak you out. There will be times when your body takes a break, it is likely in starvation mode. My longest break was 3 weeks and that was very hard and a bit frustrating but totally expected. The body is actually fascinating, it trys to control you. You are testing it and it is testing you.

If you go a couple weeks without losing then you need to examine what you are consuming but for now, you really need to focus on getting your water and Protein in. It is the most important thing.

Use your scale only as one tool in your tool box. Use your clothes and how you feel guide you as well.

Good luck! You are going to do fantastic!

I gained, too, these past couple of days. I am meeting Protein and Water requirements, but I am also battling Constipation. I actually "gained" 4 pounds since 2 days ago, and that is after a week-long plateau just 2 weeks postop. My surgery was on April 8, and I am also right around 30 pounds total. It's very frustrating, but I keep hearing that I am doing everything right and eventually my body will catch up to my miniature meals, lol.

I have been reading about the "3-week stall," which, apparently, is an actual thing! I am sorry you are stuck in the same place I am, but it does help me to see that this is very normal. I wish you the best! :) @@fuzzyfeline

I am not a dietician or nutritionist, but my nutritionist does not allow Protein Shakes after 2 weeks. They feel that the calorie content is to high for the Protein benefit and that you should not be drinking calories. liquid seeps through the stomach and does not provide long term fullness, desired by this surgery. Just a thought, you may want to try eating high protein foods over drinking Protein Drinks. Good luck and keep up posted!

Thanks for all the support you've given me. I realize this is just part of my 3 week stall. It helps me psychologically to realize this is normal and accept it. No matter what, life is still better than pre surgery.

I had read different things about the benefits of Protein shakes and the calories vs the Protein. I asked my surgeon, and he said we could drink them for the rest of our lives if we wanted. Said it's a great source of protein to have 1 or maybe 2 a day. I only drink 1 per day right now.

I had gained as well around my 3rd week. I was dealing with an extended menstrual cycle because of the blood thinners, and I truly believe it caused me to keep extra Water weight on.
It's finally calmed down and I'm losing again!

You'll get over this hump!

Just remember this is a marathon, not a sprint. You WILL lose the weight but let it happen in it's own time. Just keep doing the right things and in the long term you're going to continue to lose, I wouldn't recommend weighing yourself every day because you're going to drive yourself crazy every time your weight fluctuates.

Good luck!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
