Had surgery Jan 9th. Down 16 lbs already (only lost 4 during pre op diet).

I go back to work tomorrow. Still weak and incision site is still sore, but feeling pretty good.

Been on Clear Liquids up until now. Tomorrow I can start thicker Protein Shakes and cream Soups, etc. I know the weight loss will slow right down once I start adding in some of those things, but I'm okay with that. My goal is to lose another 7 pounds between now and end of February. Although I would love for it to be closer to 12, I know I need to be realistic. Sounds like most people stall once they get to the purée stage, and that stall can last for a number of weeks.

My BMI is 31.8 - I'm self pay & have my consult today!!! I am so freaking excited I can't stand it!!!

I thought I'd post about my status because I know when I was getting started there weren't enough posts from low BMI people about their results. It's impossible to gage much info from those who are a lot heavier.

I was 53 when I was sleeved seven months ago and weighed 200 pounds (33 BMI for a 5'6" female). I didn't do a pre-op diet. I lost 10 pounds per month average for the first four months after surgery and then about six pounds a month the next three. I'm 142 pounds now, have a normal BMI, and no longer have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, sleep apnea or a fatty liver. My size 8 skinny jeans are getting loose.

I exercise regularly, but not fanatically. I eat small amounts of anything I want, but I mostly stay away from starches. I don't count calories per se, but I log EVERYTHING on My Fitness Pal. Cheats and all. I have had an occasional glass of wine or vodka, but I get tipsy immediately and don't imbibe very often. I CONCENTRATE on Protein and let everything else fall in line. If you get 65-75 grams of Protein in, you don't have room for much else. Except for Peanut Butter cups, there's always room for one of those minis, so I try and stay away.

My honeymoon phase is just starting to fade, so I am a realist. Get the work done now and build up healthy habits!

Why would I regret this decision for a second? I don't!

I just got all my pre op paper work today. I will be setting up surgery a surgery date on monday. Hopefully by the end of feb I'll be wheeling out of surgery :) I have already started transitioning to the diet needed after and have started meal planning for the first few weeks when I'll need to cook but be too tired. I'm also planning on making some Soups this weekend. :)

I'm going to freeze the soups in a muffin tin for portion :)

Hi! I've just started thinking about getting a gastric sleeve. BMI is 31, 5'9 and 210. I'm in Arizona, anyone in the area, recommend a good dr? I have read on this post hat someone was able to get the insurance to pay for it while doing a hiatal hernia repair surgery. Anyone else able to have insurance cover it this way? Thanks

I just had my surgery done this way 10 days ago. I had to travel to dallas texas. I went through the Nicholson clinic. My bmi was 33.4 when I started. Since starting my preop diet I have now lost over 30lbs! They billed my insurance for the hernia repair and I paid out of pocket for the sleeve itself. How much you pay is largely based on your insurance. All total for the sleeve and hernia repair I came out of pocket about $5k. :)

I did my pre op testing at local doctors and just flew down for the surgery. I had 2 different phone appointments with my surgeon but that was it. I flew in on Monday evening. Had my sleeve done on tuesday morning and was back home by Tuesday evening. We recover ALOT fast because we are low bmi. I called a Couple local surgeons and they wouldn't even speak to me. So I went with the Nicholson clinic

Hi everyone,

I started my journey at 214 in December 23, 2015 and today I weigh 170.3. I am down 44 pounds in 4 months. The last 3 weeks I've been in a stall but I love the results!!! I am off 2 diabetic medications, 1 for cholesterol and no more sleep apnea. Mine was approved and covered by my health insurance, of course, I had my co-pay. I had no complications and my arthritis is just about healing itself. I do take chewable medications and followed the program to the T. I have support groups that we talk every week and I still continue to go to Magee Womens Hospital to attend their support groups. I am 57 years old and I feel 30 again!!!!

Hi everyone,

I'm finally back for an update! I had been in the typical stall for quite some time, so was hesitant to post too much and come across pessimistic.

Here's a recap. Had my surgery January 9th in Mexico. BMI was 29, weighed in at 153.4 (only 5'1) on January 1st when I started my pre-op. I had an easy pre-op, basically just did Protein shakes for Breakfast and lunch and then veggies and chicken for dinner. Three days before surgery was yogurt only diet, but I did add a Protein shake once a day just to keep my Protein up and my carbs down. Day of surgery I weighed 148.4 lbs, which put my BMI at 28.

I went down to Mexico on the day of surgery and spent a few days in San Diego afterwards. First time I weighed myself on my home scale I was 139.2 and that was on January 17th.

Jan 18 - 137.2

Jan 19 - 137.0

Then my weight started to bounce around and stall out so I stopped weighing daily.

Feb 1 - 137.6.

I started working out Feb 1, scale was still moving super slow, so again just weighed every once in a while

Feb 5 - 136.0

Feb 23 - 135.2

Then I went on vacation to California. Just got back last night and I weighed in this morning at .... 129.0!!!!!! That puts me at a BMI of 24.4, the high end of NORMAL WEIGHT.

Why did I finally drop? I don't exactly know, but here's two things that probably helped.

1. I ate out a lot, and although I didn't eat lots at a time, my calories were definitely higher, so I think that actually helped boost my metabolism.

2. I got super sick the second last night, stuck in the bathroom (sorry if this is TMI - but basically all night pooping and puking --- although it was mostly dry heaving since there was no food in me). So I probably am down quite a bit of Water weight, and fully expect I may gain a couple pounds once I get hydrated again and eating somewhat normal.

Anyways, I just wanted to post an update since it's been a while, and I feel like I may have finally broken this stall. I am less than 6 lbs above my lowest weight as an adult. Still 14 lbs above my goal weight, but that being said, I am looking forward to increasing my exercise and putting on muscle, so realize it may be difficult for the scale to drop steadily if I'm toning up.

Alindsey, I totally understand. I'm 5'5 and 250, BMI of 41, which barely qualifies me, I'm seeing the surgeon on Thursday. Also, I'm a band to sleeve revision.... Totally regret not having the sleeve, I realize I am not in control and if I don't get help with the sleeve, then I'm not sure what I'll do. Hopefully I won't need to make other plans and I can focus on getting healthy with the sleeve

Almost one year out and my body has chosen its goal I believe. Started out with a 33 BMI (5'6" 200 pounds at surgery--also was my HW). Comorbidities of HBP, sleep apnea, high cholesterol). Lost 55 pounds in first 6 months and have been bouncing around 138 for last four months. All comorbidities are gone! I'm in a size 4-6 and look and feel like I did in my 20's. I run a 5k on the treadmill 3-4 times a week and eat 1500 calories a day. I usually get 65-75 grams of Protein a day and I attempt to eat under 100 grams of carbs. I have a sweet tooth and indulge a little every few days. As long as I do protein first, my ability to go overboard isn't possible. I've found eating too few carbs backfires. My body needs them for energy to workout. But carbs are usually in the form of oatmeal, quinoa, fruits and vegetables. I can eat a lot more than six months ago, but I'll never be able to handle a plate of Pasta or a sandwich again. I love my sleeve and have zero regrets!

My BMI is 35.5 and my Co morbidity is OSA and hypertension. Have been using a CPAP over 6 yrs. My team suggests that I maintain, not to lose wt . I have finished psych evaluation and am finished w one of two nutrition classes. Hope to be scheduled for surgery in June or july!

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
