Not losing any more weight?

Recommended Posts

I didn't question his reasoning as he is the expert and he said my intake od 2 Premier Protein shakes a day was what he thought was hindering my loss. He was happy with the weight loss between visits. I didnt start out at a very large weight, so my loss so far is about half of my goal.....im just reading the posts and am discouraged that it has not fallen off more quickly...i have not gained any weight though, so i guess thats a positive.

It's okay to ask them to explain why they are making a recommendation. I question my doctors and nutritionist all the time.

It is always ok to question anyone providing you with medical care about your own body or why they recommend something for you. And it's obvious from all the forums here that many doctors have different plans, routines, goals, or expectations. However, there are some standards across the board that most doctors follow such as high Protein, lots of fluids, and no eating & drinking together. If my doc instructed me to go against one of these fundamental rules when I already know that most other doctors in the same medical field recommend otherwise, I would question immediately.

I was just curious if he gave you a reason and what that might be. It may be that you shouldn't supplement so much Protein, and instead work toward your protein goals with healthy food choices. If you're almost 4 months out, you should be able to have more soft protein sources and not rely on two shakes a day. By no means am I trying to tell you what to do, I'm just trying to understand why your doctor would recommend something that goes against every other program out there.

He did say no supplemental ( premier protein) was needed at this point and those may be the reason that things slowed down. He told me that what i was eating contained the Protein needed. I didnt question because he was very straight forward with his answers and explanations. I don't think this surgeon has went against anything ive seen or read on here or any other sites. It was a strict requirement to get 60-80 grams of protein for 90 days after the surgery. He just said at this poibt, the food intake would replace the Protein Shakes. His entire program is laid out in a binder given to me weeks prior to the surgery and it clearly states that when normal food is able to be consumed, supplements should be reduced or even stopped. Those shakes have way more protein in them (30grams) then what my NUT says my body can even process at a time. Either way, im sure ill reach my goal, if nothing else, this tool has been a blessing by getting me off my diabetes and blood pressure meds. I appreciate your words, but i, in no way feel like my surgeon has veered to far from the norm.

@beachgurl84 I find that odd also. I have seen where people are advised to get Protein from solids and meats, but I don't think I have ever seen anyone with a goal of Less Than 60-80 g Protein.

Yes, thanks for clarifying that! I was really wondering about that, and that makes perfect sense!

Too clarify....the surgeon said to cut the Protein shakes to below 60, NOT total Protein intake.

I hit a nasty stall at around the 6th month. only lost 2 at the beginning of February, then NADA for weeks and weeks. Man oh man did I whine on here about it! But I got some great advice like everything above, and it finally broke :) Along with HIIT, I increased calories to around 1100, and incorporated a few more carbs in the form of low sugar fruit like berries. I lost 6lbs in March, and with a little over 20lbs to lose to hit goal, I was happy. Keep us posted on how you do!

Then why aren't you getting in 60 gms of protein?

Those shakes have way more protein in them (30grams) then what my NUT says my body can even process at a time.

The theory s that the body cannot process more than 30 gms of protein in an hour. If you are sipping longer than that you're fine.

Find a pool and try Water aerobics. You can even just walk the pool. My gym membership is paid for by my insurance. Check your policy.

I am getting the correct amounts, just not getting it through the premier Protein Shakes.....and

I've never had to sip anything since the 2nd week. I was one of those that was really wondering if I even had surgery. I never had ANY issues that I've read about on here. None of the, "I can only eat a tablespoon of something", none of the " I throw up", none of the "im in so much pain"......it's really been a strange few months. I've followed the advise of my Dr to a tee.....exercise daily, eat correctly, the whole nine yards. My Dr has a great program and the staff is there to answer any questions that arise........although I have not had many questions at all. I can easily get most answers right here. I've found that I am not alone when it comes to these things. It seems like every Dr has his or her own way of doing things and the differences an be quite astounding. I was told to crush my meds, some on here never had to crush meds. I was told to drink 2 Premier Protein shakes a day, some are told to sip on all morning long. I know there are basics to the surgery and the months afterwards, but there really is no set in stone plan. In all honesty, the studies are still not concluded as to what is really supposed to take place because there are so many variables to each individual.....yes, there are basic guidelines, but there are as many variances as there are guidelines. My Dr has a plan set up in a binder and they say follow the plan, but there are things in it that would never apply to me since I did not experience some of the adverse side effects that some people do. Thanks for the input and thoughts and advice. Maybe the loss will start back like most everyone else's has. If not, I see the Dr again soon and we will see what the follow up provides.

@@stuknbama - I agree we have different programs. I just confused. I am pleased with my program as well and I have had no issues either, I am not discounting your program at all. Like you I've had no issues eating or drinking. I even had a handy handbook that outlines my entire program from pre-post op. However you said you aren't getting all you Protein in but you don't have issues eating or drinking. I'm asking why not? I understand not relying heavily on Protein drinks. My program strongly encourages getting my Protein from food. as well. So I'm confused by your statement that you aren't losing because you don't get all your protein.

Blerdgirl. .....quit being so confused...im more than meeting 60grams of Protein, im just not doing it with supplements. I clarified that more than once on above statements.

I have slowed down a lot too but I am okay. I didn't set a hard time limit to get to goal. My scale # is a 2nd goal. But it is frustrating at times.

I was told to lay off drinking my Protein. I still drink Protein Shakes but get most of my protein from solid, healthy foods.

I have noticed nuts were becoming an issue for me....seems like I switched one addiction, carbs, for another addiction, nuts. Lol so being much more mindful.

The other issue is a knee injury I sustained at work. That's slowed me down too.

One thing this experience has taught me is patience and mindfulness.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
