B-12 Self-Injection Question

Recommended Posts

Today is the day (night now) that I'm to give myself my 1st B-12 injection. I have looked at videos online to see it done, but may videos have comments debating the best site to inject at. Does anybody have any tips?

Sorry I can't help with that, however, if you are unsure, do you have a urgent care facility near you where you could go and ask/have them help you with it? Did your Dr. show you how to do it? How urgent is it that you have it tonight? Can it wait until tomorrow, where you could have someone show you? I hope you can find a good solution, and when you do, maybe share it on this site for those who have the same questions as you. Good luck to you.

My dr prescribed B12 shots and his nurse does the dastardly deed for me. My insurance covers the service and my co pay is 38 cents! Guess it is worth me driving to the docs office once a month to get my shot. This covers the b12 solution also. I can't imagine giving myself a shot. I'm too squimish!

Thank you for your help. My doctor told me, but I couldn't remember the location. So I went with the intra-muscular in the upper thigh. It wasn't anywhere near as bad as I had hyped myself out about (blushing).

Now I don't have to worry about it until May 1st! :D

I gave it to myself in the meatiest part of my upper outer arm. You could probably go into a walk in clinic and get them to show you like at Walgreens, CVS or something. Maybe even a fire station.

I had intravenous Vitamin B12 shots (once each month) for about a year before I switch to daily sublingual B12 tablets. The shots were to the upper arm. I had my wife do it. She pinched the skin together and inserted the needle at the top of the pinch point. I changed to daily tablets because my wife hates blood and every time, just as she inserted the needle into my arm she would turned her head away so she wouldn't look.

I do mine in the thigh. It's not very critical where you inject because it doesn't need to be into a muscle. Merely under the skin. That is why the needle is so little. You can do arm, abdomen, thigh. Anywhere is ok according to my doctor.

My Dr gives them but know nothing about them and very curious. Do they give you energy? I've had 5 back surgeries and the meds I take make me feel like doing nothing.

I had my doctor's office do it but his office hours suck and I work an hour from his office. The nurse would give it in my upper arm. I then went to self injecting in the abdomen. I picked there since that is where I used to do my Byetta shots. I then switched to sublingual B-12. I actually had to stop taking the extra B-12 since I was way over on my last pe-surgical blood test.

I just had a blood draw today and will get results on 4/30/2015.

I did find studies that appear to show that sublingual and injections have the same rate of absorption. My surgeon also told me that.

Incidently my insurance does not cover the self injected B-12 but would cover the doctor to do it.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
