How many calories a day?

Recommended Posts

I was sleeved on Jan 28th and have only lost 20 lbs. I eat 70 mg of Protein per day and drink a minimum of 64 oz of Water per day. I still struggle with exercise because I have minimal energy. I think that has to do with the fact that my nutritionist won't let me eat anymore than 700 calories a day. I looked through my MFP entries and noticed that I am only consuming 550-650 a day. Almost all of that is protein. Does this sound low to you? Even without exercise it seems to me I should have lost more than 20 lbs over 8 weeks with such a low calorie intake. Also, for the record, I was 280 the day of surgery.

You are doing fine. One thing I learned is weight loss is 95% food intake. It toook me 5 months to get my energy back. I am now at 10 months 130 lbs down and started training for a 1/2 marathon in April. Last week I ran a 15 K. Give your self time. As my mentor says do most of the stuff , most of the time and you will lose most of the weight. You wont regret this ride.

I was sleeved on January 27th. I have only lost 15 lbs since day of surgery. I eat about 700-750 cal per day. I eat mostly Protein (a lot of chicken, dairy peanut butter). I try to do vegetables but don't usually have room. I do eat 1 - 2 Quest bars per day. I have only been walking 2-3 times per week for about 30 min. Exercise is very difficult bc I have chronic fatigue. I have been exhausted since surgery. Plus I have a really low metabolism according to the RMR test. According to that I only burn about 1080 calories per day so I don't want to eat too many since I can't really exercise. So I think you are doing ok.

For me at three months my weight loss started slowing down. Calories, I was also at 700. I realized at that point that my honeymoon phase was over. I am one of those people if I don't move the scale does not move. Be patient with yourself weight loss rates are different for all of us.

I was sleeved on Jan 20th and I'm down 30 lbs. On most days I'll use every calorie that MFP has to offer for that day. Occasionally I'll eat about 800 a day but no matter what I get in my Protein, Water and Vitamins. Having said that, I average a weight loss of about 3 pounds a week.

My question is... Will we still loose if we eat the allotted MFP calories per day/per weight?

I am going at about the same pace. After talking to some of the members of the GSV club, I realized that the ones that had very bad eating habits before surgery lost weight very fast due to the drastic diet change. My diet has changed very little but just reduced portions and I am averaging 2 lbs per week. Anyone else notice this?

It depends on what you are eating and/or supplements. At 6 mths I still rarely go over 900 calories, but my diet is very Protein dense and my carbs are mostly complex carbs like Beans. I exercise 5 -6 days a week and have loads of energy.

I eat between 700-900 calories a day, and drink 64-70 ounces of Water.

I was sleeved 1/13 and am only down 20 lbs. I lost 10 in the first week after surgery and another 10 over the first 3 weeks. I have lost nothing in the last 4 weeks. I am beyond depressed. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I feel like I eat nothing and the scale won't budge :(

If agree on maybe not eating enough... Or maybe, just maybe you'll have a BIG loss all at one time like a lot of people on here... Be hopeful!

Honestly, sometimes it's just seems slow but i do think you should be getting more calories in. This has got to be livable. I average 1000-1200 a day and I have since the beginning. I am super slow at losing but in a year and a half i've lost 106 lbs so it all adds up. All the little losses at up to a big loss in time. I don't think 20 lbs lost in 8 weeks is slow though. I think you are right where you should be.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
