Hi all,

I am a newly converted Lapband to Sleeve patient and given my history with my lapband and countless food intolerances, I was curious to know if any of you have any with your sleeve. By food intolerances, I mean not feeling well after eating or food won't go down, etc.

Thanks so much :)

I have severe allergies and intolerance but they aren't related to the sleeve. I had them before surgery. Post op sleeve I have had no issues with food of any sort. I just had to use common sense, chew really, really slowly and well, and remember to separate my eating and drinking with a 30 minute window.

It took a while for me to tolerate everything well but as long as I stuck to the schedule for advancing my diet, I had few problems. Rice was probably the thing that took the longest. Seems like it likes to float, but I was back on sushi rolls within 6 months. fruit skins, seeds, bread, pasta.. all of it is fine in small quantities for me. The exception might be carbonation, (there's a reason we're told to avoid it)! and if I go WAY over on sugar. Goes down okay, but tries to get out rapidly with intense cramping. One cookie serving is okay, more and I'm gonna seed a seat belt for the potty! I've learned it's just not worth the binge. Kind of a gift really. It's a great deterrent.

My surgeon has a very conservative plan for eating after surgery and I think that helped me a lot. I haven't thrown up once or felt like food got "stuck" or anything like that. I do stay away from yeast-leavened bread and carbonated drinks because they make me feel a bit uncomfortable, but to me that isn't "not tolerating," it's just that they don't agree with me as well as other foods do, so I choose to avoid them.

I haven't had any problems yet. But I haven't had Desserts or Pasta yet. I was able to eat bread with the band as long as it was toasted. I have had a 1/2 of a sandwich thin toasted - no issues but I'm too full after the 1/2. I'll put tuna on top. I just chew, chew & chew like I did with the band. I eat slow and I'm fine. Some days I can get 1/2 cup of something in and some just a few bites of the same meal

For the first 4 months I could not tolerate plain Water, lactose or artificial sweeteners. All gave me pain/cramps. But all of those passed and I can pretty much eat anything now. Certain things will make me gassy (although that can be true for someone with a "normal" stomach). Some things, like sweets and alcohol will irritate my sleeve if I eat too much. But that's more of an irritation/gastritis response rather than intolerance.

One of my surgeons explained the intolerance thing like this....especially in the beginning, our sleeves aren't quite functioning like a normal stomach. It can't process foods as thoroughly, so the food particles and molecules are entering the intestines in a different state than they have in the past. Sometimes the intestines just have a harder time dealing with these "under digested" particles and the result is intolerance to those foods. In some cases, the intolerance will get better, but other times it can last forever. And allergies are different than intolerances, but that involves going into another long discussion about immune response....

I was gluten intolerant prior to surgery. So other than that, absolutely no issues. I have a cast Iron sleeve :-) It's not like I abuse it, lol. I follow the rules. But there's nothing I can't have, and I do like spicey food too.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
