Here are my answers for right now. Ask me again in two weeks after my fourth fill. :D

1. when you drink first thing in the am is it more like:

d. none of the above- (please describe): Very first thing, a swallow of room-temp Water to take a pill goes down slowly. Half an hour later, anything goes.

2. for breakfast i eat: PLEASE also list the time of breakfast!

c. solids keeps pouch full for hours: Ummm, does a Protein bar count as solid? That's my breakfast and it works for two-three hours. I can't really eat anything more solid than that at breakfast time.

3. do you ever have acid reflux, indigestion?

c. never

4. how much can you eat of the following (round-a-bout):

*chicken (prepared any way BUT not real saucy- just meat!): Two small thighs, maybe.

*salad: A cup or more, easy.

*sandwich (made of reg. size sandwich bread): I've been tossing the bread for a year now, but can eat the whole inside of a sandwich.

*chicken, soft veggie, carb or another veggie (i know this varies with the order you eat in BUT please go buy how you typically eat?): A small plate full usually goes down easily, including potato or corn. I stay away from rice after one bad experience.

5. are you happy with your restriction?

c. no i have some but not much restriction: Our perspective changes over time. I have good restriction but right now it doesn't feel like enough so I'm getting an adjustment soon.

6. when you pb why is it: choose all that apply

a. because i ate to fast: More like I ate too MUCH, took too big a bite, or had one bite too many.

7. how often do you pb?

e. 1-2 times a month

8. how much liquids do you get in in a day?

c. 64 + ounces a day no problem

9. do you eat in the correct order (protien first, veggies, then carb):

a. all the time... well 90%

10. do you drink with meals:

b. nope

i am wanting to get some feedback the level of restriction people have.

1. when you drink first thing in the am is it more like:

c. i can drink room temp. cold beverages (about 20 oz. in a hour or less)

But, only after about an hour after waking

2. for breakfast i eat: PLEASE also list the time of breakfast!

a. protien shake-sometimes, if I am in a hurry, I wouldn't call it a Protein shake technically, it is instant breakfast

b. mushies- oatmeal, cream of wheat, scram eggs, yogurt keeps pouch full for hours

I wouldn't say for hours. I can't eat eggs, they won't go down at any hour no matter how they are cooked. Oatmeal is what I usually eat

3. do you ever have acid reflux, indigestion?

d. occasionally 1-2 times a month

4. how much can you eat of the following (round-a-bout):

protien shake: no restriction unless it is very thick

*chicken-I can only eat saucy, as in Soups or casserole. If I eat plain I can eat one bite and that is it.

*salad:Can eat until it goes out of style. I feel no restriction when eating salad-unless there are eggs, bacon or non veggies in it

*sandwich-can't eat sandwich bread at all, can eat about 3 bites if it is toasted, can eat a small piece of french bread. If I eat bread before food everything will get stuck

*chicken, soft veggie, carb or another veggie (i know this varies with the order you eat in BUT please go buy how you typically eat?):

I avoid chicken, it is just too hard to fool with. As far as meat, I am real limited. Grouper, Salmon, shrimp (basically anything seafood) goes down fine-Salmon, sometimes not, if it is overcooked. Ribeye steak--minus the fat, goes down okay.

Veggies, go down good for me for the most part. With the exception of mushy veggies--peas, corn potatoes.

Carbs, it depends on what it is. It is a trial/error

5. are you happy with your restriction?

b. no but i have good restriction

6. when you pb why is it: choose all that apply

a. because i ate to fast

b. because i tried to eat solids

c. because i wasnt paying attention to eating

d. no reason I could come up with lol

7. how often do you pb?

d. once a week

8. how much liquids do you get in in a day?

b. i struggle to get in 64 oz. (because i'm lazy)

Well actually with the time you have to wait between meals it can be a struggle

9. do you eat in the correct order (protien first, veggies, then carb):

d. most of the time i eat in the correct order (70%) but its a struggle

10. do you drink with meals:

b. nope

1. when you drink first thing in the am is it more like:

c. i can drink room temp. cold beverages (about 20 oz. in a hour or less)

d. none of the above- some mornings I have trouble taking in anything but warm liquids and sometimes they even are uncomfortable

2. for breakfast i eat: PLEASE also list the time of breakfast! -- oh...8 to 11??

a. protien shake...keeps pouch full for hours

b. mushies- scram eggs, yogurt, cheese keeps pouch full for hours

c. solids keeps pouch full for hours --sausage

e. hmmmph i skip breakfast -- it depends on the day :ermm

3. do you ever have acid reflux, indigestion?

d. occasionally 1-2 times a month --I think?? It doesn't come up to my mouth, I'm not sure, but I have burning in my esophagus sometimes.

4. how much can you eat of the following (round-a-bout):

protien shake: 12 oz. probably shouldn't, might be why I'm uncomfortable

*chicken (prepared any way BUT not real saucy- just meat!): thigh--one small, otherwise I sauce it.

*salad: don't know, I've only tried a couple bites

*sandwich (made of reg. size sandwich bread) -- don't eat bread, by choice, don't know if I can; can eat about quarter cup of innards

*chicken, soft veggie, carb or another veggie (i know this varies with the order you eat in BUT please go buy how you typically eat?): I can only eat about a quarter cup at a time, sometimes close to a half. I tend to eat foods separately and eat more often. (Doc said to eat more often and less because of esophageal irritation.)

5. are you happy with your restriction?

b. no but i have good restriction --I would like to eat more at a sitting to get in a balanced diet. I do not have a fill. I do feel very lucky that I have restriction, though. (I am still adjusting :roll eyes: )

6. when you pb why is it: choose all that apply

a. because i ate to fast or too much or WHO THE H8LL KNOWS WHY!

e. pb??? whats that i am perfect --I just get pain, coughing, and more pain. I don't pb.

7. how often do you pb?

a. never!!! never have -- ever.

8. how much liquids do you get in in a day? -- Varies from day to day.

a. i struggle to get in 64 oz. (because of restriction)

b. i struggle to get in 64 oz. (because i'm lazy)

c. 64 + ounces a day no problem

9. do you eat in the correct order (protien first, veggies, then carb):

a. all the time... well 90% -- in order to get enough Protein.

b. ummm no i eat however i want -- this also appies :nervous

10. do you drink with meals:

b. nope -- a few rare occasions I have in order to eat at all or relieve pain, it doesn't make me pb.

I do not feel that my experience is the norm. I also don't understand a lot of what happens with my band at this point. I may have a very high placement which restricts amount, or else I'm just slow to catch on. :D

My turn... now don't fall over laughing or booing me if that is a more honest reaction... My doc demands 6 weeks between fills and I am going to be extremely honest with my answers... Here goes...

1. when you drink first thing in the am is it more like:

a. i can kill a 20 oz of anything in minutes

2. for breakfast i eat: PLEASE also list the time of breakfast!

b. mushies- oatmeal, cream of wheat, scram eggs, yogurt keeps pouch full for hours

c. solids keeps pouch full for hours

A combo of b. and a. - I have 1/2 banana in Cereal (10+10 from Trader Joe's) w/ skim milk and 1 pre-cooked turkey sausage. I eat anytime between 9 and 10 am.

3. do you ever have acid reflux, indigestion?

c. never

4. how much can you eat of the following (round-a-bout):

protien shake: At least 12 oz, maybe less if it is really thick.

*chicken (prepared any way BUT not real saucy- just meat!): 1 breast or 5-6 wingettes

*salad: 2-3 cups easily and this is with lots of extra's not just lettuce.

*sandwich (made of reg. size sandwich bread): Oh yes, I can eat a regular size sandwich or hamburger w/ the bread or bun. Maybe towards the end I will eat just the filling for my last couple of bites.

*chicken, soft veggie, carb or another veggie (i know this varies with the order you eat in BUT please go buy how you typically eat?): I try to serve my meals on a salad plate vs. a regular dinner plate to limit my portions, but I can eat everything I serve myself. This is normally 4-5 oz of meat, 1 cup of veggies and 1/2 cup of starch and maybe even a roll or breadstick.

5. are you happy with your restriction?

c. no i have some but not much restriction

Right now I am at about 1.3cc in a 4cc band and I would like to have another fill, but have two more weeks to go. I have probably even gained a couple of pounds since this fill. Boo Hoo!

6. when you pb why is it: choose all that apply

e. pb??? whats that i am perfect

I PB'd once with my first band when I was eating a salad and a beet got stuck, but I have not PB'd at all with my second band. Things go down slowly every once in a while, but they always go down and I don't get the slime or extra saliva... just the deer in the headlamp look.

7. how often do you pb?

a. never!!! well less than 3 times

8. how much liquids do you get in in a day?

b. i struggle to get in 64 oz. (because i'm lazy)

9. do you eat in the correct order (protien first, veggies, then carb):

d. most of the time i eat in the correct order (70%) but its a struggle

10. do you drink with meals:

b. nope

Tricia, I noticed that you posted you might have too much restriction and that you pb several times a week. Please be careful. My husband had the acid reflux, pb'd several times a week and felt almost too restricted. His band slipped, then they thought it went back in place, but, now it has slipped again, and now he has to have his surgery redone.

I just care about you, sorry to be a downer. It is better to get a little out if you think you need to, then to have to have it slip

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.
      1. NickelChip

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

    • NovelTee

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?
      1. NickelChip

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

    • Clueless_girl

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?
      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
