Slower process than anticipated. Confused

Recommended Posts

Hi my name is Bobby, this is my first post and I guess it's because I'm a bit confused and need answers. I had gastric bypass surgery on Jan. 23, 2015 and my weight was 361. In the first 11 days I lost 27 lbs. After that I lost 10 more lbs. when I weighed in 11 days later. Since then (6 days) I've only managed to lose 1 lb. Totaling 38 lbs. I understand that is great to lose nearly 40 lbs. In a month but I guess I'm confused because so many people have spoke about losing a ton of weight in the first couple months and I'm eating very little. At the most a quarter cup of food 3 times a day and I'm so full. Is my body in starvation mode? I know 5 years ago I weighed 410 lbs. I dieted without surgery and was eating high Protein low carb and walking daily. I lost 150 lbs in 8 months. (Only to gain 110 lbs back) but I seen 5 - 7 lbs a week weight loss. Is it because I was having more calories to burn? Or is the process sometimes slower? Do I need to workout more? Again I'm just confused and looking for answers please. Thanks Bobby

Hi Bobby, I had my surgery on January 23rd also. I feel the same way, my weight loss seems to be going too slow. Seems like you lost a lot real fast in the beginning and then it slowed way down. In the beginning you might have been losing alot of Water. They fill you up with alot of IV fluids when your in the hospital. I eat very little also. From what I understand that can put you in the starvation mode and it slows down your weight loss. 38 lbs is alot in a month though so that's probably why it's slowing down now. Am sure you will get back on track though. My doctor tells me not to weigh myself every day and that I should only weigh myself more like once a week. Checking your weight every day seems to make you more anxious. It's nice to talk to someone who had the surgery on the same day though. Feel free to write me anytime.

Thanks for your comment. Helps quite a bit. Pretty cool to talk to someone that had the procedure completed on the same date. I been trying to get more Water in and I'm starting to feel better. I'm starting off the scale for a week and will check later. Hope all is well with you.

First congrats on you both for being healthy, loosing what you have lost so far is great so not worry the weight will come off just focus on getting in your Protein walking and Water. You will have many stalls which are normal and you must remember your body is adjusting you just had major surgery . Focus on one day at a time and making good choices good luck my friend .

Your body just went through a huuuuuge surgery and change. You'll find that some weeks/months you'll lose more then others, but right now, dont focus too much on the numbers but letting your body heal and adjust. The first 8 weeks are crucial to heal, not so much losing weight. I've noticed that also between months 4-6 you may find yourself stalling or slowing down with the loss, thats also very normal.

You'll do great! Baby steps. I always told myself that this process is a marathon, not a sprint :)

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
