BMI, attention from men, etc

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'm going 1/20 for my pre screening appointment. I'm very excited to do this. I've been fighting this weight issue since I was 10. My BMI is right at 35 but I'm diabetic, fatty liver, high cholesterol, snoring/apnea so I'm covered by insurance but I've been told to make sure that my weight is still at least 240 by 1/20. I have not been eating well but am worried about the weighing in. Do they do it naked? I'm worried I won't be able to gain. When I try to lose I can't and I can't gain!

Also, the biggest worry I have about this surgery (besides leaks) is unwanted attention after weight loss. I have issues with compliments and not sure how to mentally deal with that. I'm very happy with my marriage and that is not the issue.

And is there anything else I need to think about?

@@LBS15 Welcome, No they do not weigh you naked. Do whatever you have to do to make that 240! Now, as far as the unwanted attention sorry to say but too bad! Guys are gonna be guys so if they gawk at you then oh well! If your married and happy then who cares! As long as they aren't trying to touch you. If they approach you, you tell them your married (the same answer no matter what weight you are, that doesn't change unless you want it to) If someone compliments you a simple thank you is sufficient . It's going to be ok! Trust me there is WAY more issues to think about when it comes to this surgery. Good luck!

Thanks! What are the other issues I should think about?

My goal is to be off diabetic medication. My dad died from diabetes complications. I'm just looking at weight loss as a benefit.

@@LBS15 When I was at your stage I was just researching everything I could, I read, I watched YouTube videos, I was on here...it's hard to give you examples of issues because you haven't had the surgery so I don't know what issues you may have. If you want maybe you should look up issues related to this surgery on Google. Most of this entire process is a "only time will tell" the best thing you can do is just get as much info on the pre and post of the surgery and what it entails. Just remember the whole start to finish process varies with everyone and every thing so you can take away what you wish from the info but it may not all pertain to you. Getting off meds is a excellent goal!

Don't worry, men don't show me any any more attention than before! ;)

They weight you just like you get weighed at any other doctor's appointment. Nurse brings you back, checks your BP and then has you step on the scale.

As for unwanted attention, I've never heard of people suddenly being accosted due to weight loss. Some people may feel more confident and outgoing but WLS isn't turning frogs into princes.

More importantly you need to relearn how to eat and drink. When you go for your prescreening take notes regarding that. It will make you more likely to be successful post op

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I've lost a lot of weight before and men hit on me or gave me looks and wasn't use to that. And have to prepare for that.

I've been reading everything.

My biggest issue eating is social situations. I'm not normally an over eater. But when I go out I drink, eat dinner, dessert. That will be my biggest challenge.

@@LBS15 Well in the beginning you won't be able to do all that.

@@LBS15 Wait, let me clarify that, you won't be "allowed" to drink alcohol for some time (your dr will give you a time frame) depending on your restriction you may only be able to eat a few bits of different things. You can still go out it will just be more about socializing than eating.

Have a great Wednesday too! Sorry you're hungry all the time, I'm pretty much the same..and I'm sick of eating the same food all the time.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
