Did anyone NOT tell their job about surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm not telling anyone at my job or in my family except for my mother. I'm not telling anyone because 1) I'm a very private person and 2) most people are ignorant regarding surgery as they see it as "the easy way out." All of us that have done our research know that we will still have to exercise and make drastic changes to the way we eat. There's not going to be anything easy about that; however, I have pondered this and have come to this conclusion:

Let's say that for argument's sake that this is "the easy way out." If the result is becoming healthy, achieving a healthy BMI, and resolving potentially life-threatening health problems, then what the hell does it matter HOW it's achieved? It doesn't. Think about it. There isn't a one size fits all method to getting healthy period. Even at the gym, everyone's not following the same routine. Everyone's not visiting the same weight-loss center or following the same diet book either. The same goes for WLS. Just like any other weight loss method, we're going to have to work this as directed by our doctors and NUTs or else this won't work either.

With that being said, sometimes I feel like after I experience my success, that I should pass this along to my obese friends so they can experience the same success and at that point I will be better equipped to share details of my journey. I feel like people need to be educated about WLS and that I'd be doing them a favor to pull them up out of ignorance. Unfortunately for them, however, I probably won't do that as again, I'm very private and rarely feel compelled to lead the charge on anything. Also, I've noticed that when you reveal to people that you're on a diet or trying to lose weight or become healthier, they tend to begin to monitor what you're consuming and have a lot of questions and opinions for you. When you're fat and eating junk, they don't say anything...not to your face anyway. Whatever I decide to do though, will be my choice to make, as I am grown and owe nothing to any other grown folks. I only owe it to myself and to my child, who is watching, to be healthy and to set a good example.

In the final analysis, becoming healthy is the bottom line. The method is really irrelevant.

I quite working earlier this year but, I worked for/with hubby and 3 other women. They all know I've been talking about it for years and they all know. I'll tell anyone that asks. Judge if they want but I'm making a bold move to improve my quality of life.

I had surgery 11/19 and am going back to work tomorrow. My only concern is how I am going to get all my fluids and Protein in while being busy all day and I can only take sips at a time. I have a "desk" job but I am in a lot of meetings most days. Has anyone else run in to this?

@@TrimTrekker I have thought about the 2nd part of your message above too! I don't plan on telling anyone until I have achieved some level of success. There are many people I know that could benefit from living a healthier lifestyle and loosing weight. I chose this path because I had literally tried everything else and saw this as my last hope. I hope I can help others who may benefit from this as well.

I told my employer. Taking FMLA. Only specific individuals know what type of surgery I'm having. HR that is. Taking 2 weeks off. Can't wait!

Have not had surgery, yet! Tell us how your first day back works for you! Good luck and congratulations!

I didn't tell...I had sleeve last Thursday, Nov 20th and I came back to work today!

Just a little discomfort...I find it's best than being at home thinking of food. Thank God for office/desk jobs!

Day back to work went great! I was a little worn out from getting ready this morning, but once I made it to work I was great the rest of the day! Much better than I expected! Had several meetings and took my water/protein drink with me but I still don't think I got in enough Fluid. I cannot stand the clear Protein Drinks. I have tried many different ways but so far I can't drink a lot. They leave a terrible feeling in my mouth after drinking them. So other than that it is great. Helped me to feel back to "normal" again!

My good friend/co-worker and I are going to Tijuana for VSG on Dec. 19. When requesting time off from work we were told we couldn't be gone at the same time.

SO... We booked it anyways and are going over xmas break when the office is closed for 2 weeks...Happy New Year;)

That's so cool! Wish I had a buddy to go with me. Good luck to you both on your journey to a healthier life.

I told work I had hernia surgery.

This is so funny to me because I was thinking of telling work I have that too.

I am not telling them about my hernia, sleep apnea, athlete feet, or ingrown toenail! I am just taking a week off around a holiday and go back to work eating much lighter!

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
