Did you have any deficiencies on preop bloodwork? 3 month bloodwork is often recommended but you can always get your Vitamin levels checked as well as Protein serum levels and a CBC anytime. Just contact your doctor.

Are you taking all your supplements...multi vitamin, B12 injections or sublingual, Calcium, Vitamin D?

Are you getting in all your Water? ....weakness, low energy and nausea can definitely be signs of dehydration. (I know, I had to get IV fluids 3 times for dehydration when I had diarrhea for 2 months and this is exactly how I felt)

Have you talked to your doctor about your nausea? He can Rx Meds.

Call your surgeon or your nutritionist. They are more familiar with your dietary needs at this point than your PCP.

No I didn't have any deficiencies before surgery. I was anemic as a child! I only take Multi Vitamins. My Dr or dietician never mentioned B12. I feel that I am getting in my liquids, actually I have been very thirsty since the surgery. Do I calk my surgeon or just my reg Dr?

You are only on Multivitamins? My doctor has me on multi 2x's a day, calcium citrate D, Vitamin D (think it's actually D3), and B12

With the small amounts of food we are having right now I also think that just one Multivitamin is not enough. It is normal not to feel hungry but eat anyway. If your doctor asked you to do 3 meals a day make sure you have all 3 even if you are not hungry. Are you having enough Protein everyday?

Hello, I had surgery a week ago as well. I'm very exhausted after the smallest of tasks. I have been mixing 2 oz of skim milk and Protein drink and trying to drink it every 2 hours (except while I'm sleeping). I also sip on ice Water throughout the day. Every time I try to add something else, such as sugar free popsicle, pudding, applesauce, broth, ect., I get a horrible stomach ache as soon as I swallow the food. That being said, I have been able to control the nausea quite well. My doctor prescribed me 10 mg of metoclopramide hcl. Its the best holiday present ever....lol

I'd definitely look into sublingual B12 if your surgeon hasn't Rx'd injections. Intrinsic factor is required for our intestines to absorb B12 and they removed the portion of our stomach that produces intrinsic factor. This means you can't absorb the B12 you swallow (from food or vitamins). And I agree that 1 multi is not enough at this point. You should also be taking Iron, (which again, poses absorption issues and can't be taken at the same time as a multi Vitamin or Calcium), extra Vitamin D, Calcium and B12 sublingual. Iron and B12 are the most common deficiencies seen in bariatric patients, and my PCP says he sees a lot of Vitamin D deficiency in the general population.

I would normally say talk to your surgeon, but since he didn't get you on the appropriate supplements in the first place, you may want to talk to your PCP. Just tell him your symptoms and he can order bloodwork. (Full chemistry, CBC, iron panel, Vitamin D, B12, calcium, folate and zinc is what my surgeon wants to see) You don't have to be a bariatric specialist to pull blood and understand the results.

And remember 60g Protein and 64oz Water are MINIMUMS.

Hi everyone, I got a list of Vitamins to take as well. I am able to get my multi-Vitamin down but cant get all the others down without feeling very sick. I had my surgery last Thursday. Any idea's? What would you say the 2 or 3 most important Vitamins to try and take? Thanks, Kathy

Thank you all so much for all your advice. I do feel that a multi Vitamin is not enough but I do wonder why I was never put on B12 injections! I remember going into this, a friend had a VSG and also mention she had to have b12 injections. I hu honestly don't think I'm getting enough Protein in my diet. Like I mentioned before, I am more thirsty than I am hungry! I've already called my doctors office this morning and patiently waiting for a call back. I also have nausea rx from after the surgery but it doesn't help me for long.

Hi, I also was never told about getting any B12 injections. However, I am supposed to be on a list a Vitamins. Vit D, multi-Vitamin, Iron, B1, and Calcium magnesium citrate. I think there's a list of b Vitamins in all that I'm taking:-)

Did you have bloodwork? I had blood work about 5 months ago and they put me on vit d, Iron, and a multi-vit back then. I did began having much more energy after about 6-8 weeks of taking them. Of course, this was prior to the surgery.

So sorry about the nausea. It was so bad for me as well. The only thing that has helped is the 10mg of metoclopramide that my doctor prescribed me. I know the nausea was worse than the pain. I wasn't expecting that either.

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
