What tests did YOU have pre-op?

Recommended Posts

I have seen a lot of different people post about different tests they had to have before sugery. What tests/consultations did you have to have? Does it depend on the dr or does it depend on the patient?

Also, what do they do for cardiac clearance? Just an EKG?

Tests I have heard that some have had:

Upper GI

sleep Study

Bloodwork

Liver Ultrasound

EKG/Echocardiogram

Pulmonary Functions Test

Psychiatric Clearance

Also, what order were they done in?

The tests are determined by many factors...the doctor, the insurance company and your over all health.

Since I was a past smoker, the surgeon required a clearance from a pulmonologist, he, in turn, required a sleep study and CXR. I also had bloodwork, EKG and psych clearance, in addition to a Nutritional consult.

The surgeon also required a consult with the anasthesiologist, and attend a pre-op education class.

The tests were in no particular order, just whenever I could get in to see everyone, but has to be no later than 7 days before surgery, and the bloodwork could be no sooner than 2 weeks before the surgery.

Depending on your health, you will need to get clearance from a cardiologist, a nutritionist, a psychologist, your surgeon, your anesthesiologist, blood tests, upper gi, colonoscopy, sleep study, complete poluminary function, heart ultra sound, endoscope, and more if needed. Let them check you out as much as they want. The more they find wrong now, the less chance you will have of having your surgery held up or not being performed at all. Think of this as a 'one-time' head-2-toe check-up! You'll be grateful for it later on when all you have to consentrate on is getting skinny, skinny, skinny! Good luck!

My doctor required a physical, which included complete blood work and an EKG, but nothing more for me. I think the results of the blood tests determine what else might be needed for many people. The psych consult is standard for insurance coverage (and many docs require it even if one is self-pay), and a nutritional consult is also very, very common.

Other than those things, I think doctors make testing decisions mostly based on the patient's health and history. Well, American doctors, anyway.

Bloodwork and a respiratory function test was all I had. I saw a dietician very briefly after surgery, about a week into the liquid diet who just went through how to progress with me.

I needed bloodwork and a sleep study to get cleared for surgery. On the day of pre-admission testing, I had bloodwork, an xray, and a gallbladder ultrasound done at the office.

Then:

EKG/Echocardiogram

Blood test

Nutrtion Class

Pre-Surgery Consultation with Surgeon

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
