Constipation (TMI?) Solution for newbies

Recommended Posts

Sorry for the TMI, but I thought it would be useful as I have seen this be a popular topic of discussion for the newbies. I am currently 4 weeks out of surgery (SD 9/30/14) and while Constipation pain and strains have not been a major issue for me so far, I have found myself not having BM as often as I used to pre-op and it has been bothersome. Anyway, after attending a support group meeting, where my doctor and a veteren speaker were present, the speaker indicated that Fiber gummies are a stable in her diet, even 2-3 years post-op. I immediately went to Target and bought a generic brand. It has been a week and I can now say that my BMs are now more consistent, more often, no straining AND I see the difference in the scale as well. I take 3 gummies a day and get in about 12 grams of Fiber a day, which is much more than I have on my clear liquid, full liquid and pureed diets.

Just thought it might help others struggling with this.

They have gummies for everything!!!

How much sugar are in those things? I've never had/tried gummy vitamins, etc...might be something worth exploring

They really do have gummies for everything lol! Here's the ones I use:

http://www.target.com/p/up-up-fruit-flavored-fiber-gummy-supplements-90-ct/-/A-13579115?ref=tgt_adv_XSG10001&AFID=google_pla_df&LNM=13579115&CPNG=Health+Beauty&kpid=13579115&LID=17pgs&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=13579115&kpid=13579115&gclid=CI6MzKG20sECFaZj7AodnRcAAA

They are sugar-free, gluten-free, dairy-fee and soy-free according to the label. For less than $10 a month, I think I might be worth a try at least for the first month. Lots of luck!

Thanks for the info. I found that bananas worked for me. I eat 1 4oz banana a day (4 oz is a lot of banana! :-P). They're about 100 calories for 4oz.

Thanks I am noticing the change and I haven't even started the real pre-op diet yet.

Miralax (not sure if that is spelled right) and lots of H2O. This is what my surgeon told me. Some, like me, my have this issue forever. Good luck, friend.

Lots of water!!!! I also took colace twice a week to help move things along. Honestly Constipation was the only issue I have had since surgery. At about 3 months that leveled out also. I don't go as much as I use to because I eat about 1/100 of what I was eating. But I do go regularly now.

Vita-fusion makes a Fiber Gummy, too - I really like them. 2 dummies =5 grams Fiber = 10 calories. No sugar. No carbs.

I have two in the morning, two when I get home from work, and usually another 1 or 2 before bed. They're that yummy.

My doc had me taking colace for 30 days post op. I've been regular since 2 days after I was discharged. I have notice since I'm exercising more now that I'm much more regular and it's nice to take 1 less pill these days.

Aloelax from the health food store. I take it every three days to ensure movement. Water & exercise help but not enough. Fiber doesn't do it either.

I had been constipated about 4 days when I went to see the Nurse Practitioner this past Thursday, and she recommended chia seeds in plain greek yogurt..IT TOTALLY WORKED!

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
