Went in for Roux en y, but was given an Omega Loop Gastric Bypass

Recommended Posts

Hi, 4 days post op. Surgeon was unable to do the Roux en y as I hadn't lost enough preop? I lost 8 kg (17 llbs) and never cheated even the slightest. Says this is just as good, though higher chance of reflux, less of bowel twisting. Anyone else experience this?

Hi I never heard of that , did your doctor discuss this with you before your surgery?

I have the Omega loop ( mini gastric bypass) by choice. When I did my research on the different procedures the MGB was what I kept being brought back to. RNY seems to have a lot of complications, the Sleeve will stretch out. My surgeon said every day he is converting sleevers to the MGB (omega loop). I am by no means an expert on any of the weight loss procedures, but for me MGB was the best choice. I need the restriction and the malabsorption.

The MGB is much better option over the RNY. It is created by Dr.Rutledge, but insurance won't pay for it, since there is only 16 years worth of research compared to 70 on RNY.

The MGB is more common in France, Germany,India now then any other weight loss surgery.

I had it in India, and so for so good.

Thanks everyone...I do feel relieved, though I do not doubt my surgeon at all. He had to make the call to do what was best for me. I'm concerned that the pouch is small enough...just finished liquid phase and never felt full...could have kept eating. I wish I was struggling to swallow a little...don't want to risk overheating!

Once you get on soft foods you will feel some restriction. I was worried too. When I was on the liquid phase I never felt full

I had the MGB with less intestine bypassed and only about half my stomach sectioned (rather than the 70-80%). Anyway long story short. It's apparently better than the full RNY and results are just as comparable to other forms of WLS. So you should have nothing to worry about :)

Good Luck

Thanks for sharing this - I'm only 6 days post-op, and wondering why I'm not getting that stuffed feeling from full liquids like sfree pudding or cream of wheat. No issues getting plenty of fluids in. Have been worried that something didn't take with my surgery! ;)

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
