Popcorn? Okay or Not?

Recommended Posts

The first months after surgery its probably not a good idea. As others said, empty carbs. But down the line there is nothing wrong with it as long as you dont get the butter, cheese or whatever else flavors due to the calories and fat. My wife buys a couple different brands that have 35 calories per cup. I will fill a snack sized ziplock which is maybe over a half a cup. The big thing with something like this is to portion it. Dont sit down with a big bag of you regret it later when your bloated and sick because you ate too much.

Some others have mentioned nuts. Yes they are great and healthy, BUT(there is always the but) Nuts are very very high in calories for very little amounts. If raw they are not as bad, but dry roasted and the calories skyrocket. Again, its about portioning. Dont sit down with that whole can of nuts. Grab your scale weigh out an oz or so and put the can away before eating. While I have eaten nuts when I needed an on the go meal from a convenience store, I am mostly saving them for when I hit maintenance and need to bring my calorie count up.

I can eat an entire bucket of movie popcorn if I tried really hard. It's my biggest slider. I just recently bought an air popper (u'll never eat microwave popcorn again if u cut open an unpopped bag and saw what was inside - ick) and occasionally eat a couple cups with real butter. I'm within 15 lbs of my goal weight and have added back some of my fav foods, 1 being popcorn.

My nut only recently said I could have a little bit every now and again but only the 100 calorie kind. I'm 8 months out so I am basically healed. It was a no-no earlier on because of all the little shells and bits that can get stuck and whatever else they do. Especially the sharp pieces (like little plastic shells).

Nuts are perfectly acceptable, especially almonds. You can have those.

I haven't eaten microwave popcorn in years. You are so right about what is in that bag! Yuck!

I tried popcorn a few times.. couldn't eat much.. and I got stuck on it.. yes it is empty calories and no benefit whatsoever but sometimes you just get a snack attack. I don't do many nuts either, even though the Protein is there the salt is not my friend.

I was a popcorn addict and I can say my NUT said some people can tolerate it and others cannot. I am only two weeks out so obviously I haven't had any but I know there will be a time when I can and I will try it. I didn't eat a ton of it at one sitting before and it will be on occasion but I will have to have a tiny bit when I go to the movies. I love popcorn!

I had a couple of cups of it a few times after the healing period. (3 mos.) It caused no digestion issues. Empty carbs, it's true, but lots of fiber!

I keep 100 calorie packs of popcorn, pretzels, and Cookies in the house so that if I must have a snack, I don't do something stupid. I don't eat these things often but they usually ease the craving without overdoing it. What I really find helps me if I'm a little hungry but don't want to make bad choices is the Laughing Cow light cheese wedges. They're only 35 calories a wedge and one always does the trick for me.

My dietitian told me I would be able to eat it later on down the line.

This drives my husband crazy, but popcorn is something that I have to get when we go to the movies. That's probably why we don't go that often- because getting popcorn, a drink, and movie tickets are so dang expensive. Anyway, I was really worried about how I would do without it. I went to the movies about 1 1/2 months post surgery and as soon as I walked in and sniffed the air I knew I couldn't resist. I ended up getting a small with no extra butter and a Water since we can't drink soda. I ate probably about 1/2 of the it and was fine. No nausea, no feeling of food stuck in my throat, and no sweats. My sleeve is so stubborn- most things I used to love make me sick now. Popcorn is something luckily I can still have once in awhile and in moderation. Thank goodness.

Once I was cleared to try regular foods, I started eating popcorn (no butter, dash of salt.)

I'm of the everything in moderation school of thought. I'm not opposed to it. And it is okay now that I am on an unrestricted diet. But I haven't had more than a couple of pieces here or there. I love it at the movies though. I've only been to the movies once post sleeve, but did not have any popcorn because we stopped and had lunch right before our show. My husband is the popcorn guy, so any that is in the house is usually eaten by Mr. Bottomless Pit. :)

I love popcorn like everybody else does in my family. For Christmas last year my parents bought me an air popper which I love. When I feel like I need to snack usually its on the "time of the month" I usually pop some popcorn. Only things I put on it is either little bit of olive oil or sesame oil and sea salt. I cant go to the movies without contemplating for five minutes in the lobby if I want or need popcorn. Usually after the five minutes I walk away and go see the movie. Only a few times I have bought myself popcorn.

No personal experience to speak of, but in the pre-op class I just attended the nutritionist said it was okay to start trying things like popcorn and nuts after we're back on regular food...she just said to go slow, it's really more of an issue of individual tolerance.

I'm glad to hear it because I went ahead and tried popcorn right away at the regular food mark. popcorn was a staple in my dad's house growing up and I was missing him...

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
