I've been working up the courage to tell my parents about my decision to get VSG for about a week. Tonight I finally got a hold of them and broke the news. To my complete shock and amazement, they were actually SUPER happy and excited for me! It was so completely the opposite of what I expected, though in retrospect, I don't know why I thought they'd have a negative response. I thought I would get a whole spiel about why I didn't need to resort to surgery, how they knew I could lose the weight "on my own", and possibly some stories about people/celebrities who had bariatric surgery and regained the weight or whatnot. But my parents KNOW me. They've known me my whole life! So of course they have seen me through all of my ups and downs and struggles with my weight. Of course they would know how thoroughly I research things and carefully I make decisions! So of course they would be happy for me making a sound decision that will positively impact my life and my health. Duh!

I feel so relieved. Now I just have to tell my sister when she gets back from vacation. Let's hope she'll be as happy for me as my parents are!

I'm happy for you that it went so well. And as a another parent of adult children, I am high-fiving your parents for being so supportive.

Hi Jamie, I too was nervous about telling my parents (and I'm not young). Thankfully, I received the same reaction &support as you. My sister has been my biggest cheerleader. It Feels good be open & honest. A good support system is really important when you go through this process. Good luck w/telling your sister but I'm sure you won't need any luck :)

I'm so happy you had such a supportive response. My sister had to talk me into telling my parents (I told her first because she was accompanying me to Mexico). When I finally told them, they were a little shocked, but then totally on board for all the reasons you mentioned. Gotta love the folks!

I completely understand your nerves. My approval process took about two years, and even though I told my mom about a year in to that process, I didn't wanna tell my dad until I had a date set. He's big in to alternative medicine, and I was afraid he'd try and talk me out of cutting up a healthy organ and having anything to do with the medical industrial complex, etc. But to my surprise, he was also super supportive! Along the way, he's always giving me suggestions for extra supplements and stuff, and actually, as long as it's nothing homeopathic, I'm always happy for the tips. My parents have both been great. They know this has been a life long issue for me, and I think they're happy to finally see a successful change.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
