I go Friday to get my date from the surgeon for gastric bypass - I've completed all requirements as of this afternoon. At my OB appointment this morning, the doctor and I were talking, and the nurse in the room with me tells me she had bypass 3 years ago, and although she looked healthy and slim, she says to me, "It's not what it's cracked up to be, I've not had a day since I had the surgery that I actually felt good." Wow. It floored me that she said that.

Please, those of you who have had the surgery for a while, please reassure me. I'm doing this surgery because most days I don't feel good now. I want to feel good and healthy and energetic. Do you?

I can only speak to my experience 6 weeks out but I feel great and have for at least 3 weeks now. No complications, can eat anything that's on plan (haven't strayed off the plan) and I'm down 30 pounds today! I have a lot of energy -- even got on the treadmill last night watching TV because I was just needing to do something even though I had exercised before.

She should have said "this is my experience but others may have a different experience".

I tried to read the good and bad stories here and online and went ahead and I'm so happy I did. You'll find the best and worst -- you just have to decide if the risk of having surgery with complications is great than the risk of not having surgery and being obese.

Don't get discouraged. You will find many, many more people who are thankful they had the surgery than you will find people with major regrets. I am four months post-op, and occasionally have a fleeting moment when I question my choice to have the surgery, but 99% of the time I am very happy with my choice. I am healthy, off all my medications and have plenty of energy. As long as you really educate yourself about the complete lifestyle changes you will have to make and are committed to make those changes, you should be happy, healthy and much slimmer in a few months.

Thank you both. I am sure of this. I just needed to hear it again. After hearing so much about how great everyone looks afterwards (and she did!), I had never heard anyone say that felt bad after having it...3 years later no less.

I think everyone goes through the same apprehensions , before the surgery,as you are.I can very well understand your situation.You do not need to be stressed or discouraged as there are more people who are thankful for their choice of having the surgery than those who are regretting it.Look up all that you can about the do's and don'ts and also follow every step your surgeon tells you.I am sure you will sail through fine. Infact you will be proud of your decision.Good luck dear.Do keep us posted on your pre and post surgery condition.

I'm just over 4 months out and I've never regretted my decision. I think a lot of the process is about attitude and staying positive. Please don't let a random comment side line you or cause you some trepidation. You deserve to be healthy and enjoy life and that's just what this will do for you.

Carol, I just realized that your almost exactly where I started. If all goes as planned, just imagine spending the holidays at around 155 lbs. :) sounds awesome doesn't it? Now quit doubting, commit fully and live girl.

Thanks y'all! It just surprised me so much considering that the surgery obviously worked for her. I just hope once I'm her size will be energetic and happy to be healthier.

I have not had my surgery yet but during the nutrition classes I just took they said if you have the bypass and don't continue getting the 60-80 grams + of Protein you are told to get in daily you will feel terrible. Which is a lifetime thing and they tell you that but I know a few people who didn't continue to take their vitamins/protein as directed and they didn't end up looking or feeling well at all.

Im only four months out but I'm down 75 pounds. I am very happy that I had the surgery. I just spent the weekend at a Water park with my family and I was able to go on all the rides and actually enjoy myself. Last year when we went I had a miserable time because I was so overweight and unhappy.

Don't let her get you down!!!! This surgery has been the best thing that has ever happened to me. The only time it sucked was when I was in the hospital, and that's because they gave me a pain pump with morphine in it and I was so doped up. A soon as I got home and the morphine wore off I was fine. Didn't even take a pain or nausea pill. I used to not be able to do anything without being in pain. Now I can walk five miles on the treadmill and ride an actual bike 15 miles, just did that one today. I was tired cause it's hotter than hell outside but once I cooled down, I was fine. I could not do these things two months ago. When I was 325 pounds. Don't let some negative nancy discourage you, she may not be following her diet plan.

Four months and 76 pounds down, I feel great, I like looking in the mirror now, I can do so much more. I feel like I'm me and not me with a bunch of extra stuff on top.

I get my Protein, take my Vitamins and drink my Water every day. It was hard at first but I am so so so glad I had surgery. (Sleeve)

I definitely know the feeling! I just got my Sep 10th surgery date, and my "friends" at work found out somehow that I am having WLS and have let me know how miserable they have been since they (2 of them) have had theirs. It is frustrating to not have support from them...but we are different people, in different stages of life. I have researched, planned, waited...and now I am ready!!! Bring it on!! :)

      So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

        It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

      I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

        I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

      How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

        Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

        I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

        I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

        I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

      Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again. 
      I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent. 
      I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

      Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
      For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
      For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
      Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
      Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
      It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
