Experiences with Phentermine?

Recommended Posts

My band doctor put me on phentermine when I couldn't seem to break a plateau. It gave me energy, but it made my hair fall out in clumps. I stopped taking it as soon as I realized that was the cause, but it took a good month for the Hair loss to stop. My BP is also much lower now that I'm no longer taking it.

RellaBelle, I took Phentermine when I was in my 40's and it works but, it can mess with your heart and you have to be very careful and stay in constant touch with your Dr. As to say which one would be the best WHO KNOWS but It is almost like you are on a high in the morning and mid afternoon I was like I didn't care about ANYTHING. This was just my experience.

Thank you all SO much for replying with all of your experiences. I've never taken diet pills, not even Alli because I just don't trust them and you all have validated my distrust of them. I was just wondering because as I said in my post, a friend who had the sleeve is currently taking it and she seems to be doing alright. Though I will say with all of your experiences, I will steer clear. I have an appt with my PCP this coming Friday and I was wanting to speak with her about my weight and what options I had. I just moved to the area in Feb so I'll be meeting my PCP for the first time and will be immediately talking to her about my weight and what I would like to do [VSG]. I really don't like the sounds of the mind altering, mood altering effects that this medication seems to have on people. Not to mention needing to be weaned off of it once it is time to stop. I honestly did not realize it was an amphetamine. Yeah, definitely will NOT be partaking in that.

I used to take it quite regularly. It made me very irritable and you have to drink gobs of Water with it to keep from being hungry. It does work for a while but you can build a tolerance to it...37.5 is the most I was ever on and could take. There were times I lost and times I just stayed stable.

I think I took it several years ago, but it made me emotional & mood swingy. I also have a heart murmer (I was born with it), so I was afraid to use it in a long-term way. They took a diet drug called fen-phen off the market because it was giving people heart attacks or other heart issues. Phentermine was part of that. This drug scared me.

It made me soooo grumpy, anxious, irritated ect. It works but you have to really be consistent and it will take about a year for full results. The pounds will pile right back on quick though as soon as you quit!

I think that phentermine is a great crutch. Remove it and you fall right back into old habits. I had used it several times over the years but always regained what I lost plus 5 more pounds when I quit the phentermine. The last time I tried it I broke out in hives. I kind of think of the hives as a blessing as I finally made a decision to pursue surgery.

Hi, I've taken Phentermine. I had a not very bright doctor prescribe it for me and tell me I would drop weight no problem. My appetite was curbed and I think I lost five lbs or something, but I would lie awake at night with my heart feeling like it was racing. Not a good feeling. I could tell it wasn't good for me.

She put my husband on it as well. When he went into the ER (probably not related to the Phentermine) his doctor thought it was a stupid decision of hers and pulled him off it right away.

From what I can tell it's basically a hyper-stimulant and about as good for your body as slamming Red Bulls all the time. I'd pass.

I took phentermine for 2 weeks solid before I had to stop taking it or taking smaller doses because I couldn't sleep and my heart always raced. Once you stop taking it, your appetite returns with a force and you regain most if not all the weight. I lost ~25 lbs in a 3 month span of taking it on and off, but I did VSG still, so that's gotta tell ya something. It's also a drug that is not meant for long term use and loses its effect on your appetite over time. Wasn't worth it.

I took it about 10 years ago for about 6 months along with Weight Watchers and lost about 50 pounds. I went off it because we wanted to get pregnant and I gained something like 20 pounds back in 6 weeks, it was ridiculous.

I have used for a long time in and off. At first your not hungry and totally wired but after being on it for a while it starts to lose that effect. I have always gained the weight back and then some. If you have tried loosing weight and are struggling between surgery and using then I would recommend surgery.

....

The only benefit I got out of the whole experience is that I wasn't required to do a supervised weight loss program before getting my band since I had gone through that ordeal. Good luck, but RUN!

I got a prescription, took one pill and didn't like the way it made me feel so I didn't take them again. But when my surgeon interview me he asked if I had taken them. I relied, "Yes, one pill." He said it was help with the process since I had a prescription for it.

My first visit was April 1, 14. I was approved May 7, 14. My surgery was July 3, 14.

Buy it for insurance purposes but don't take it.

I've tried every known weight loss drug known including the Fen Phen and phentermine on it's own. I had no side effects from the phentermine but after about two weeks it was no longer effective on me. I would not use it again ever.

Phentermine is no good. I've tried it and lost a lot of wieght but put it right back on when I stopped. It is so bad for your body please don't take it. I wss sleeved yesterday and I am very happy I did it. The pain is honestly not too bad and they glued my incisions so I expect no scars either.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
