I just love how folks are living their lives these days. So often I think of the time I wasted by being sick and obese. But then I say to myself that I wouldn't be the person I am today without going through the darkness to come out into the light.

Today, my friend and I are going to Lincoln Center to see Giselle. It's one of my most favorite ballets and today, I can just enjoy it without worrying about the things that I used to think about like being able to get a cab because now I can get around town by subway just as easily as pie these days. I can walk up that beautiful staircase of the Metropolitan Opera House instead of having to take the elevator. We can stroll over to Columbus Circle after the ballet and I won't be struggling to walk.

We'll go to Mari Vanna tonight for yummy Russian food and I know I'll enjoy it without overeating. I'll walk out of that restaurant with my head held high and totally in control over choices and portions. Then when I wake up tomorrow, I won't feel horrible and guilty for once again, not being able to control myself.

Life is good. Have a great Saturday everyone and hopefully you are enjoying weather that is as spectacular as we are having here in NYC.

PS: If I get a chance, I'll take a picture of The Met and the fountain and upload it for you guys. If anyone remembers Moonstruck, that's where Cher and Nicholas Cage met up before seeing La Boheme.

YOU are doing it , you Look marvalous Darling.

LOL...he took me to the Lego Movie. So, I matched his geek with my Finding Bigfoot addiction. I think I may have won the geek award for the night. I'm ok with that! It was fun :)

Heading out later to brunch with some gals from my old job. Still good friends with these ladies even seven years after leaving the company. It's another beautiful day here in NYC and can't wait to see them. Some of them haven't seen me since before the hip surgery and don't know that I'm off the cane...or half my size by the way...

Tomorrow, I lay low as the inmates will be running the asylum. Yes...it's Pride Day here in the West Village. The Queens and Trannys will be descending upon us at first light. It's truly an experience to be trying to go about your business as usual without staring at the half naked boys, and hairy men in drag. What a trip!

Have a great weekend all!

Hi all. Summer vacation finally here for me only working 3 days a week. Bandaversary coming up can't believe it's been a year a great amazing life changing year. I have a check up on that day with my surgeon and go for a MBS to make sure my band is whee it should be that's his policy. Kinda excited to see my band lol I'm a need I like the video MBS I guess it's an occupational hazard as a speech/feeding therapist lol. Hosting a BBQ fir the 4th super excited it's like an anniversary party !!! I wanted to throw one last July 4 but 3 day op it wasn't an option for me. This year it will be complete with Protein shakes just for good measure lol.

Completed another 5k obstacle course and can I say it was easier than the Spartan race !! Never thought those words would come out of my mouth. And when I reviewed the pics. I looked like such a normal size person and I think I'm finally seeing it in my everyday life. Although I do see plastic surgery in my future summer project research surgeons and prices.

After relaxing poolside for a few hours post race I went shopping and bought some shirts and even a dress in a drum roll please a MEDIUM !!! Now my pants size is still a 12 dam thighs but I'm working at it I will get into a dam single digit pants size.

Again thank you all for inspiring and encouraging me here . This is my happy safe place when things are crazy good and bad . Hope I can get my older brother to join this site and get the band. I don't want to push him cause he is stubborn and will do the opposite for spite but I pray he realizes how with the work it's a healthy life hanging event.

Geez that post is all over the place lol

Have a awesome Sunday

Karen...don't let them chase you off this forum. You know alot more than they do and I'd remind the newbies that their inexperience is why they are on the forum to begin with.

Karen, you help me every time I read something you've posted. But I totally get the going silent for a while.......

In other news, it's our wedding anniversary weekend and I'm feeling great. We are in Boston for a couple of days. It's hot and so much fun to be on the waterfront and feeling good in my little Capri pants and top. I have a long way to go but right where I am I'm feeling "normal" -- not fat. I feel healthy and good things are happening wherever we go. Eating-wise I've still not caught on to just how little I have to order, so tonight a picnic from the leftover lunch we had and maybe a Greek yogurt and nuts later. Tomorrow another fancy lunch place and probably a lot more leftovers. So wonderful to "be" in a restaurant, really present and not just eating, eating, eating. I'm enjoying my food and stopping. Hotel upgraded us to a suite and sent up champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. I stick with flat wine -- my Proseco days are over -- but a couple of those strawberries oh my goodness. Then stopping. Satiated. It is delightful to have this kind of lifestyle.

So I guess after gastric bypass surgery, I cant eat flock chips because they are fried???  They sell them on here so I thought I could have them. So high in protein and no carbs.  They don't bother me at all.  Help.

It's possible for a very high fat meal to cause dumping in some (30% or so) gastric bypass patients, although it's more likely to be triggered by high sugar, or by the high fat/high sugar combo (think ice cream, donuts). Dietitians will tell you to never do anything that isn't 100% healthy ever again. Realistically, you should aim for a good balance of protein, carbs, and fat each day. Should you eat fried foods every day? No. Is it possible they will make you sick? Maybe. Is it okay to eat some to see what happens and have them for a treat every now and again? Yes.

I'm not at all hungry on this liquid pre-op diet, but I miss the sensation of chewing. It's been about two weeks––surgery is in two days––and I can't imagine how I'll feel a couple of weeks post-op. Tonight, I randomly stumbled upon a mukbang channel on YouTube, and it was strangely soothing... is it just me, or is this a thing?

I actually watched cooking shows during my pre-op, like Great British Baking Show. It was a little bizarre, but didn't make me hungry. I think it was also soothing in a way.

How do you figure out what your ideal weight should be? I've had a figure in my head for years, but after 3 mths of recovery I'm already almost there. So maybe my goal should be lower?

      1. NickelChip

Well, there is actually a formula for "Ideal Body Weight" and you can use a calculator to figure it out for you. This one also does an adjusted weight for a person who starts out overweight or obese. https://www.mdcalc.com/calc/68/ideal-body-weight-adjusted-body-weight

I would use that as a starting point, and then just see how you feel as you lose. How you look and feel is more important than a number.

      2. Clueless_girl

I did find different calculators but I couldn't find any that accounted for body frame. But you're right, it is just a number. It was just disheartening to see that although I lost 60% of my excess weight, it's still not in the "normal/healthy" range..

      3. NickelChip

I think it's important to remember that the weight charts and BMI ranges were developed a very long time ago and only intended to be applied to people who have never been overweight or obese. Those numbers aren't for us. When you are larger, especially for a long time, your body develops extra bone to support the weight. Your organs get a little bigger to handle the extra mass. Your entire infrastructure increases so you can support and function with the extra weight. That doesn't all go away just because you burn off the excess fat. If you still had a pair of jeans from your skinniest point in life and then lost weight to get to the exact number on the scale you were when those jeans fit you, chances are they would be a little baggy now because you would actually be thinner than you were, even though the scale and the BMI chart disagree. When in doubt, listen to the jeans, not the scale!

Tomorrow marks two weeks since surgery day and while I'm feeling remarkably well and going about just about every normal activity, I did wind up with a surface abscess on on of my incision sights and was put on an antibiotic that made me so impacted that it took me more than two hours to eliminate yesterday and scared the hell out of me. Now there's Miralax in all my beverages that aren't Smooth Move tea. I cannot experience that again. I shouldn't have to take Ativan to go to the lady's. I really looking forward to my body getting with the program again.
I'm in day three of the "puree" stage of eating and despite the strange textures, all of the savory flavors seem decadent.
I timed this surgery so that I'd be recovering during my spring break. That was a good plan. Today is a state holiday and the final day of break. I feel really strong to return to school tomorrow.

Now that I'm in maintenance mode, I'm getting a into a routine for my meals. Every day, I start out with 8-16 ounces of water, and then a proffee, which I have come to look forward to even the night before. My proffees are simply a black coffee with a protein powder added. There are three products that I cycle through: Premier Vanilla, Orgain Vanilla, and Dymatize Vanilla.
For second breakfast on workdays, I will have a low-fat yogurt with two tablespoons of PBFit and two teaspoons of no sugar added dried cherries. I will have ingested 35-45 grams of protein at this point between the two breakfasts, with 250-285 calories, and about 20 carbs.
For second breakfast on non-workdays, I will prepare two servings of plain, instant oatmeal with a tablespoon of an olive oil-based spread. This means I will have had 34 grams of protein, 365 calories, and 38 carbs. Non-workdays are when I am being very active with training sessions, so I allow myself more carbohydrate fuel.
Snacks on any day are always mixed nuts, even when I am travelling. I will have 0.2 cups of a blend that I make myself. It consists of dry roasted peanuts, cashews, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, pistachios, and Brazil nuts. This is 5 grams of protein, 163 calories, and 7 carbs.
Breakfast and snacks have been the easiest to nail down. Lunch and dinner have more variables, and I prepare enough for leftovers. I concentrate on protein first, and then add vegetables. Typically tempeh, tofu, or Field Roast products with roasted or sautéed vegetables. Today, I will be eating leftovers from last night. Two ounces of tempeh with four ounces of roasted vegetables that consist of red and yellow sweet peppers, sweet potatoes, small purple potatoes, zucchini, and carrots. I will add a tablespoon of olive oil-based spread, break up 3 walnuts to sprinkle of top, and garnish with two tablespoons of grated Parmesan cheese. This particular meal will be 19 grams of protein, 377 calories, and 28 grams of carbs. Bear in mind that I do eat more carbs when I am not working, and I focus on ingesting healthy carbs instead of breads/crackers/chips/crisps.
It's a helluva journey and I'm thankful to be on it!
