Some days lots of restriction others not so much

Does anyone have this experience? Some days I have good restriction other days I feel like I have very little. I still don't overeat and I still track my calories. I am 11 months out have lost 120 and am still losing. But, for example, for dinner tonight I ate one cup of turkey chili and I was still hungry. Usually this satisfies me. An hour later I ate another half cup because I still felt hungry. Also some days I can barely finish a cup of Soup and other days it doesn't seem to fill me up. Today I felt hungry no matter what I ate and I do take an acid reducer twice a day. I am going to ask my dr about this when I see him next week but I was wondering if anyone else goes through this where each day is so different from the next.

I experience this, too. I think the days that I'm SUPER kosher-sleeve-y (no liquid before or after eating, dense Protein first, etc., etc., then the dense Protein makes kind of a "plug" and restriction is high/good). When I'm in more of a hurry and eat more absent-mindedly, I think those are the days I don't feel restriction because I haven't been as observant of "the rules."

Soups are poor indicators of restriction as the liquid content helps signal the pyloric valve to open and the contents of your stomach begins to empty into your intestines. How is your restriction if you have a piece of chicken or a grilled ground turkey patty?

I am just a few days over a year out and my sleeve has it's finicky days. I agree with PDX above, you can't tell true restriction on Soups or sliders, you have to test it with Protein.

Some days I can eat 2-3 ounces in a sitting, some days, only 1-2. I never know until my nose starts up the faucet routine and I feel as if a burp is stuck. I have learned that if I don't eat ssssslllllllloooooooowwwwww, I will find myself too full the hard way and that's not fun.

Soup is my friend! I can eat it slowly but eat enough (over time) to be content and still feel I am getting good Protein and veggies! Is it ok to eat it often? I dont know what the valve talk means. PDX man can you expand on this?

With a burger patty or a small piece of chicken I will feel satisfied but not full like I used to feel in the old days. But then I will have days when I can't eat a full piece. It just depends on the day. Maybe it has to do with Water. But I measure and eat only that amount (3 oz) even if I still feel hungry and I stay within my calorie range. Yesterday was a real challenge in that regard.

some days I can eat 3 ounce of chicken on top of 1 cup greens and feel good but not full, other days I can't. And a grilled turkey patty with nothing on the side satisfies me but I don't feel the restriction like I used to before I was done with the party. I've been really diligent about no carbs because I'm close to goal so maybe without the carbs to fill me I am having more room. Sometimes if I still feel hungry I will have a few strawberries since they are low cal and filling.

The bottom line is whatever moves from the stomach to the intestines must be in a liquidy, mushy state. The longer it takes to get to that state, the longer you are going to feel restriction ... the longer you will be full ...

Depending on the soup, of course, the time from when it lands there to getting to a mushy state will be far less compared to eating a chicken breast, especially for us since we no longer drink while we eat. The body is going to have to secrete all the liquids to get it to that phase. We are not assisting the mushy process by drinking liquids.< /p>

makes perfect sense but is the nutritional value as good when it moves to the intestines faster? I am very worried about my eating. Sometimes I dont feel i get nearly enough. Soup is so easy and I am eating nearly every weekday at lunch. I usually get chicken with veg. It rarely hurts and I can eat it slow enough to get most of it down. I hate the pain I get when I eat (for exapmple) chicken breast. I thought soup was a good choice but I want to be sure It really is.

For the most part, nutrients are absorbed in the intestines, not the stomach. The stomach is merely the mechanical part of digestion, as is detailed in the article. Also, take a look at:

As far as pain with eating, take smaller bites, chew more thoroughly and wait longer before taking another bite. Stop eating BEFORE you think you might be full.

I DEFINITELY have days like this. It actually seems to be more of cyclical thing for me. Like that's just the way my system works. I test with lean grilled chicken, and have days where more than an oz. at a time is too much, and days where I can eat 4oz.

I never seem hungry and have more occupancies of suddenly feeling weak because I have forgotten to eat for most of the day. I don't have problems with drinking however, so I just be sure to stick with g2 on my non hunger days. I don't usually eat as much Protein as I'd like on those days, as fruits/veggies sit better in my stomach. But within a couple days I get hungry and am able to eat Proteins and other foods fine, then back to the non eating again.

I discussed this with my surgeon's PA at my last visit. She didn't seem concerned about it, especially considering this has been going on since I started on soft foods (I'm now 7.5 mos out).

It's been working for me so I'm not questioning it :)

Yes some days I can eat a lot (like before my cycle) and some days I have no capacity.

According to my surgeon the sleeve is like any other organ and is affected by things like atmosphere, humidity… There are days when we have higher and lower capacity based on the atmosphere around us. Sort of like when lap-banders fly and they feel their band tightening because their stomach swells.

      Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
