At the same time, it is known that 30% of patients complain of heartburn after the procedure, necessitating administration of omeprazole (a drug reducing gastric acid production). This is because the original sleeve gastrectomy procedure destroys the valve mechanism of the junction between the esophagus and the stomach, converting it into a direct tube. If a sleeve gastrectomy is performed as the first stage of gastric bypass, then after the second stage (gastrojejunal bypass) the heartburn disappears. But if a sleeve gastrectomy is planned as a sole operation, then persistent heartburn might be a serious problem for the patient.

This is why you have to do your research and see what is best for you. I'm very glad that you are doing that. I really push people to look this over, as it is a lifetime commitment on their part.

I appreciate you posting this and I think it is very wise that we all do our research so you know what you are "signing up for". Not every sleever... in fact MOST don't have uncontrolled reflux. It is however a serious problem for those that do.

I don't know enough about bypass to know the potential problems... but it is all about tradeoffs.

I do think that if someone had reflux before the sleeve, they probably should think pretty hard about it...

I never had reflux in my life until my lapband was too tight. That was living hell.

I had reflux pre-op. I took Nexium daily for many years. But I noticed from my many diets that when I ate properly, my heartburn was drastically reduced. I spoke with my surgeon about this pre-op and he agreed I was still a candidate for the sleeve. I took my omeprazole daily for 6 mos post sleeve. Now, I haven't had any issues with reflux for at least 6 - 8 weeks. Every once I awhile I feel a slight bit of heartburn. I have the omeprazole on hand for times like those, but usually don't even take it. It usually is gone within an hour and is directly related to something I probably shouldn't have eaten or hormone changes right before TOM.

I'm thrilled to not be taking a daily medication or be suffering the pain of reflux / heartburn. I know if I returned to my terrible ways of eating, I would have a problem again. For me, it's a great reminder to eat right.

I know there are people on here who do eat right and still experience reflux / heartburn. I feel badly for them. I'm thrilled that my situation is different and just wanted to share my experience.

Thanks. All that matters is that I want people to be aware of the pros and cons of different surgeries and to investigate. This is a lifetime commitment. Know what you are getting into.

You're right - it is all about tradeoffs. I think those who have it before may be well served to understand what happens if they want the sleeve, complications and may have to go to bypass after all.

I could not imagine that ... kudos to you for getting thru it.

Thank you Momof3! That's great to hear. I'm glad that works for you. I've found trigger foods that it happens with, and when I eat too much. I'm a salad freak and love to eat that and fruit/veggies. I do try to shove them in because I really need the Vitamins & minerals. I eat meat on them but also do sprinkle Protein powder on them. I find it gets rid of the pill issue I have with the gastroparesis.

I got re flux after my surgery never had it before and it really sucks but would i go back to being fat/ nope , i know that i cant eat spicy food or mexican food something with the chili/ chili powder that makes it worst for me and certain spices / Vitamins also do it to me but hey it could be worse and i could have dumping sydrome like my friend ... lol
