Do you eat regular or non/lo fat versions of food?

Recommended Posts

When I used to diet (pre wls), I had my share of fat free plastic cheese, fat free mayo, and even low fat Peanut Butter. No more. I don't eat enuf of anything for it to make a difference. Plus I hear fat satiates u faster than the fat free version, meaning u eat less and be satisfied.

Now, I do have 2% milk cuz I just don't like the taste of full fat milk. And fat free milk reminds me of breastmilk, it's so watery. And hubby won't drink 1% so I buy 2%. Its got like 8 calories more than skim milk. Whoop-dee-doo.

So do u eat fat free/low fat or regular fat stuff? Why?

For omelets I'll use egg beaters so I can add more cheese. But, then I use a 2% cheese sometimes too. I use lite mayo and miracle whip. I eat the Oroweat slim breads(lapbanders have to make concessions eh). I sometimes use butter but on a day to day routine, if I need something greased up I'll use "I can't believe its not butter" spray.

For the most part if the taste difference isn't a lot, I'll go with the lite version. If the lite version is icky I use the real deal.

fat free products are terrible tasting to me. they actually replace the fat with sugar. I know people who only eat fat free everything and they are fat.. I use eggbeaters too but they actually do better than real scrambled eggs for me. I still use Truvia and sugar free proucts but definitely not fat free. I don't eat enough of any of it to make that much difference. I love my band cause it's made me free of "diets".

oh I forgot to say that I was diabetic so the sugar for me is a no no. I feel much better if I don't eat much sugar.

Depends on what it is. I don't drink milk anymore but have always bought skim milk so I still buy that for the family and for cooking purposes. Other items, I try to look at the entire nutrition label. A lot of the low fat stuff has added carbs/sugars to enhance the flavor so that doesn't really help much. If it doesn't make a significant difference in the calories, I usually end up buying the regular version. I don't do low fat cheese because I don't like it. Same with Mayonnaise. There are some greek yogurts that I really like though that are 80 calories for the same serving size as the ones that are 170 calories so I buy those sometimes. I also use real eggs. I'm not a fan of egg substitutes at all. Also, I do buy some SF hard candies. I have a bag of those right now that I've had for 3 months. I just need to have it around so that if that sweet tooth strikes, I have the option of having something like that. I also have a bag of dark chocolate in the freezer that has been here for about 4 months. I just need to know it's there if I need it.

I do the same thing. I have a bag of Cadbury Eggs in my nightstand "just in case". Makes me feel better to have them in the house. Did the same thing when I quit smoking 23 yrs ago. Felt better to have some cigs in the house "just in case". Even tho the bag has yet to be opened (and they've been in there since they first came out, before Valentines Day), I KNOW they're there in case I get a hankering...

I check labels as overall calories matter to me more than fat. But when choosing between fat free or sugar free (such as coffee creamer) I get sugar free. I just seem to reach my sugar limits per day faster than fats. And these limits are determined by some guidelines given to me by my doctor and specializing my settings in MFP. Some times at the end of the day I think I should just eat bacon as I have fats and a little Protein left. Lol.

I'm a rebel - I don't do reduced fat.

My doctor's theory is I eat so little of everything and if I'm doing my Protein the little fat I'm getting from cheese or the little bit of mayo I might add isn't going to hurt. I do 1% milk in my shakes and coffee.

I eat the real version of everything. It makes me full faster and I don't get hungry an hour after eating. I rarely eat fried food but choose real mayo, full fat cheese, etc. "Diet" food has always been detrimental to me because it isn't tasty and led me to binge!

Throwing in my 2 cents... I feel that I've gone through too much pain to not try to maximize my weight loss now so with mayo I go light as it's only 35 cal for a tbs and like most other posters if the cal count is down and it tastes comprable then I go with the reduced fat/cal brand but if not then why not go for the taste? Good topic too as I wonder if we know for sure just how all those SF items will affect us down the road with all them chemicals they put in them :o

I have been using lite or reduced fat or sugar free for so many years I have continued doing so. Now, for mayo ( and now Miracle Whip) they have a reduced fat version made with olive oil that I love. It is as good (to me) as it's full fat cousin and a MILLION times better than it's fat free cousin. I have drank skim milk for years and will continue to do so only because I don't like the other kinds. I do use "I Can't Believe It's Not Butter" spray now in lieu of margarine or butter for the most part. ( what little I use) And I go for sugar free on other items only because they taste ok to me anyway. I have used sweeteners for years in my coffee and tea, so I see no reason to change that. I do a lot of the right things over all, but I also do sometimes pick choices I probably should not. It's the whole "everything in moderation" idea....

I do both. I guess it depends on what we're talking about. For instance if I'm having a sweet craving that I can't kick then I will do a 60 cal sugar free pudding or a skinny cow treat of some sort. I use greek yogurt in place of sour cream, I do use real butter and olive oil when roasting veggies. I also will do 2% cheese but will do regular too (if just depends on how many calories I have remaning for the day). I find that the things that are FF not only taste terrible but typically they're not good for you, they have hidden agendas so to speak, things that are FF tend to be higher in sugar and carbs so I elect to consume a few more calories instead.

I only do low fat in sour cream, sometimes in cheese and definitely 1% milk. I have to have the real deal when I eat anything with mayo, which is not much these days, since I don't eat sandwiches. I will have a sandwich again some day, maybe even soon, but no fake mayo for me. Someone mentioned a mayo substitute called something like "So Creamy" that I purchased, and it is pretty tasty with a mustard twang to it. Perfect for hotdogs if and when I decide to try one again.

I don't do "fat free" but I do my best to stay away from sugar. I use Hellman's Light mayo most of the time. I use full fat cheese most of the time as well. Sargento has an ultra thin slice that is perfect.

I try to eat only real food.

I also try to avoid eating those edible, food-like substances made from chemicals as they're not ACTUALLY food and they mess up your hunger signals.

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!

Having gall bladder surgery in a few days and I so hope the recovery is easier than the one from the modified DS! I could use a bit of luck/pep talk for a change. I'm starting to be able to walk around without experiencing dizziness, but it would be great if the random pain in my chest and abdomen would go away!!
