Excuse me....have you heard of Hurricane Irma?!? And now we’re on Hurricane Nate. It’s only been a little over a month.

What were you saying about the intensity and frequency of hurricanes again? Do you watch the news? Or are you living in a fantasy world, where we can use and abuse this planet without consequences?

It’s called climate change. Please, please do some research so you are no longer ignorant of the actual facts. Thanks

Why did we dig this crusty old thread up? Looks like almost a decade had gone by.

We are the parasites, and earth is the host. Global warming is either part of the natural ebb and flow, or the beginning of the end. Arguing is pointless. Just do your part, or don't. Death is inevitable...💥

Bill Nye said it all on his world tour Sept-Oct.

"97% of climate change deniers are over the median population age of 29 years."

"But in every age demographic, climate change accepters of scientific evidence outnumber the disbelievers and skeptics."

I'm a rather liberal person myself who used to be Christian, and science is a huge reason as to why I'm agnostic. Science provoked rational questioning of things I merely was told that don't stand up to cursory scrutiny, never mind higher standards of proof. I own two hybrids, one SUV and one mid-size car. I don't follow green politics, I like the efficiency of electric over combustion. I like technology. So I think its inevitable we find more environmentally friendly tech with good ol' capitalism with a mix of CSR.

That being said, it's pretty clear to me climate science, as an umbrella term for numerous other sciences, is far too complex for us to get as much a grasp on as both sides like to think. Is the Earth warming? Maybe. Depending on the data you look at, depending on who's modifying the data. There's some obvious conclusions to draw from constant warming of the globe and melting of ice, but we don't know if that is really going to happen or to what degree. It's obvious given the lack of conclusive proof regarding AGW claims that this is not something someone who thinks that highly of science should be acting as if there's conclusive proof that humans are this dictatorial over the Earth's climate. It looks far more to me like the opposite, that we're the ones at the behest of mother nature and thus far the only irrefutable proof I've seen that relates to the "leftist" (a term for regressive conservative-style liberals who seem to have forgotten what liberalism really is) movement is that we have variable impacts on our local environment, and of course that climate isn't static. As to what impact we have on the global climate system.. its clear we don't know.

The issue is so contrived in politics and the "green" religion that one can hardly even trust "studies". Data has been manipulated, re-imagined, and so on by both sides. Scientific papers are now published and pushed into the media as "fact" before they're even peer reviewed -- that should be very alarming and invoke a high amount of skepticism among people who claim to like science, yet it doesn't. It's really aggravating how badly this science, and countless others, are managed now. In the end, as a result, irrefutable proof is all I will rely on before I conclude anything (as in I'm agnostic about the conclusion presented of humans being able to control worldwide climate), and for the pro-AGW crowd it's extremely accurate models that accurately predict climate -- that will show me we really have a grasp on climate. Some people obviously have far more loose standards (especially if it fits a narrative) and that's their prerogative. I don't like trying to sell fear, and that unfortunately is the currently mainstream idea, mainly because "leftists" see trying to bullshit people as a way of getting their way politically.

Global warming is real and due to the meat industry. Go vegan!

By all means, go vegan. That is a worthy aspiration that more people should consider.

But, please, your opening statement is only minimally correct.

ADJUSTED: "Global warming is real and partially due to the proliferation of the consumer meat industries as well as general industrialisation and misuse of privately owned fossil-fuel driven transport."

That's a lot closer to fact!

Al Gore has been saying that the science has been settled for many decades. He is not a scientist. But the scientist that support the man-made global warming theory have refused to debate the subject, saying the science is settled. Generally that means that the hypothesis stands on very weak legs. If it is really settled, it would be a slam dunk to debate and debate would provide a critical evaluation looking at the subject from all angles - that is what all of science is all about.

The most accurate temperature data set comes from satellites. Global temperatures have flatlined according to the satellite data from 1998 and the same time carbon dioxide levels have risen dramatically. A 20 year pause is not weather, it is climate. The climate has been changing for thousands of years without the aid of mankind. The earth has experience many great climate disasters over the years. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/A_Chronological_Listing_of_Early_Weather_Events.pdf

Good lord. There is no debate. The earth is warming and has been since the Industrial Revolution. 99% of scientists agree climate change is real and measurable and in many cases predictable.

It's mindblowing that this thread is a decade old and still alive, and a horrible testament to our modern inability to differentiate between hard science and snake oil televangelism. There are such things as experts, and those experts say CLIMATE CHANGE IS REAL. You do not have to be from a coastal area to understand this in real time, but it sure as heck helps.

I'm beginning to think the internet broke the Baby Boomer generation and took some of X with it. Something about blowing the doors off information access without any quality control or standards resulted in an entire generation and a half losing the ability to tell the difference between credible sourced evidence and hogwash. Maybe exposure since birth will mean the millennials will develop some sort of antibodies against conspiracies and manipulated information, otherwise we're screwed.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!

Well, tomorrow I go in for an impromptu hiatal hernia repair after ending up in the ER over the weekend because I couldn't get food down and water was moving at a trickle... I've been having these symptoms on and off for a few weeks but Sunday was the worst by far and came with chest pain and trouble breathing. The ER PA thinks it is just esophagitis and that the surgeon and radiologist are wrong. But the bariatric surgeon swears it is a hernia, possibly a sliding one based on my symptoms. So he fit me into his schedule this week to repair it! I hope he's right and this sorts it out. He's going to do a scope afterwards to be sure there is nothing wrong with the esophagus. Here's hoping it all goes well!!
